Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for parts of Mid North Coast and Hunter Forecast Districts.

Areas of heavy rain about the southern Mid North Coast and parts of the Hunter today. Damaging winds possible about parts of the coastal fringe.

Weather Situation
A complex low pressure system near the Hunter coast today is enhancing a moist and unstable onshore flow, supporting bands of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Winds will also strengthen about the coast as the low deepens. The low is expected to begin moving slowly eastwards taking it further offshore from this evening.
HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Mid North Coast and Hunter
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected about the southern Mid North Coast and parts of the Hunter this morning and afternoon. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 50 and 100 mm are likely, with isolated falls of 140 mm possible. These conditions are expected to ease during the afternoon and evening.
South to southeasterly winds with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS and peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible about the coastal fringe north of about Norah Head today, easing during the evening.
Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Gosford, Cessnock and Maitland.
117 mm was recorded at Collombatti in the 6 hours to 2:10 am.
75 mm was recorded at Majors Creek (Moparrabah) in the 3 hours to 1:10 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

Minor Flood Warning For The Bellinger River

RENEWED MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT THORA AND BELLINGEN FROM SUNDAY MORNING
Rainfall during Saturday has caused river level rises along the Bellinger River. An initial minor flood peak has been observed at Thora and Bellingen, but renewed minor flooding to a similar level as the initial observed peaks is possible from Sunday morning.
The situation is being closely monitored and this flood warning will be updated as required.

Bellinger River:
Near minor flooding is occurring along the Bellinger River.
The Bellinger River at Thora is currently at 2.92 metres and steady, just below the minor flood level (3.00 m).
Small renewed rises are likely along the Bellinger River at Thora and the river level may have an extended peak around the minor flood level (3.00 m) during Sunday into Monday.

The Bellinger River at Bellingen peaked at 3.86 metres around 03:00 am Sunday, with minor flooding and is currently at 2.54 metres and falling, below the minor flood level.
Small renewed rises are possible and the Bellinger River at Bellingen may reach the minor flood level (3.70 m) Sunday afternoon and remain around the minor flood level into Monday.

NEAR MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT MACKSVILLE DURING SUNDAY MORNING
Rainfall during Saturday has caused river level rises along the Nambucca River. Moderate flooding is occurring at Bowraville, where the river level is nearing a peak. River level rises to near the minor flood level are possible at Macksville later on Sunday morning with the high tide.
The situation is being closely monitored and the flood warning will be updated as required.

Nambucca River:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Nambucca River.

The Nambucca River at Bowraville (Lanes Bridge) is currently at 7.53 metres and steady around a peak, above the moderate flood level.
The Nambucca River at Bowraville (Lanes Bridge) may remain above the moderate flood level (5.80 m) until late Sunday afternoon.

The Nambucca River at Macksville - Princess Street is currently at 1.18 metres and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Nambucca River at Macksville - Princess Street may reach near the minor flood level (1.70 m) Sunday morning.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Sunday and the early part of Monday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Mid North Coast, Hunter and Central Tablelands forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Rainfall during Saturday has caused river level rises along the Orara River. Minor flooding is possible at Glenreagh Bridge and Coutts Crossing during Sunday morning.

Orara River:
Minor flooding may occur along the Orara River.

No river level observations are currently available for Glenreagh Bridge, however, based on the nearby automatic gauge, the river level is expected to be below the minor flood level and rising.
The Orara River at Glenreagh Bridge (manual flood gauge) may reach the minor flood level (4.00 m) late Sunday morning. Further rises are possible.

Rainfall during Saturday has caused small river level rises in the Hastings River. With forecast rainfall, minor flooding is possible at Settlement Point on the high tide Sunday evening and again on Monday evening.

Hastings River:
Minor flooding may occur along the Hastings River.

The Hastings River at Settlement Point is currently at 0.59 metres and rising with the tide, below the minor flood level (1.20 metres).
With forecast rainfall, the Hastings River at Settlement Point may reach the minor flood level (1.20 m) Sunday evening and again on Monday evening with the high tide.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE FOR PARTS OF THE MID NORTH COAST AND CENTRAL COAST CATCHMENTS FROM SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY

A trough lies along the northern NSW coast while another trough is moving east across the inland during Saturday. On Sunday, these systems will combine and deepen to form a low pressures system near the NSW coast. This low is expected to bring widespread rainfall and may cause minor flooding in parts of the Mid North Coast catchments, Wollombi Brook and Tuggerah Lake from Saturday night into Sunday.
Catchments in the Flood Watch area are relatively wet.
Moderate rainfall is forecast across the Flood Watch area for the remainder of Saturday into Sunday, with locally heavy rainfall possible.
There is some degree of uncertainty over the exact location and timing of the heaviest falls. Localised river level rises, and flash flooding are likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall.
This weather system has the potential to cause minor flooding in the Flood Watch area from Saturday night into Sunday. Flood Classes (minor, moderate, major) are only defined for catchments where the Bureau provides a flood warning service.
