Major Flood Warning For The Paterson And Williams Rivers

MAJOR FLOODING NEAR THE MARCH 2021 FLOOD POSSIBLE AT GOSTWYCK FROM TUESDAY MORNING
MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT DUNGOG AND MILL DAMS FALLS FROM TUESDAY MORNING
Heavy rainfall totals since Sunday have resulted in rapid river and creek level rises across the Paterson and Williams catchments. Moderate flooding is occurring along the Paterson River at Gostwyck Bridge where major flooding near the March 2021 flood is possible early Tuesday morning. Moderate flooding is occurring along the Williams River at Dungog and Mill Dams Falls where major flooding is possible from Tuesday morning.
Further moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast for the next few days, which may result in further rises.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for heavy and locally intense rainfall across parts of the Hunter Forecast District.
The situation is being closely monitored, and the warning will be updated as required.
Williams River:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Williams River where major flooding is possible from Tuesday morning.
The Williams River at Dungog is currently at 7.62 metres and rising, above the moderate flood level (7.60 m).
The Williams River at Dungog may reach the major flood level (8.50 m) Tuesday morning. Further rises are possible.
The Williams River at Mill Dam Falls is currently at 7.88 metres and rising, above the moderate flood level (7.60 m).
The Williams River at Mill Dam Falls may reach the major flood level (9.10 m) Tuesday morning. Further rises are possible.
Paterson River:
Major flooding is expected along the Paterson River.
The Paterson River at Gostwyck Bridge is currently at 12.02 metres and rising, above the moderate flood level (10.70 m).
The Paterson River at Gostwyck Bridge is expected to exceed the major flood level (12.20 m) early Tuesday morning. The river level may reach around 13.50 metres Tuesday morning with major flooding near the March 2021 flood level. Further rises are possible.

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING WINDS CONTINUING ABOUT THE NORTHERN HUNTER AND THE MID NORTH COAST.
Weather Situation
A coastal trough currently positioned offshore from the southern Mid North Coast is forecast to slowly track northwards into Tuesday, with heavy, locally intense rainfall and possible damaging winds expected over coastal and inland areas on the southern side of the trough. Damaging winds are likely to ease during Tuesday, while heavy, locally intense rainfall may continue into Wednesday.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands
Prolonged moderate rainfall with isolated areas of HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to continue for parts of the Mid North Coast, northern Hunter and adjacent parts of the North West Slopes & Plains and Northern Tablelands districts. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 60 and 100 mm are likely. 24-hourly rainfall totals between 90 and 130 mm are likely. Moderate to HEAVY RAINFALL is forecast to shift further north into the Mid North Coast during Tuesday, possibly continuing into Wednesday.
Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is also possible during this period with persistent heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms over coastal areas between Seal Rocks and Nambucca Heads, as well as inland elevated parts of the Mid North Coast district. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 100 and 170 mm are possible. 24-hourly rainfall totals between 160 and 200 mm are possible.
Southeasterly DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible over coastal areas between Norah Head and Nambucca Heads for the remainder of tonight and into Tuesday. Damaging winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds by late Tuesday afternoon.
A Flood Watch and various Flood Warnings are current for multiple catchments. A separate warning for DAMAGING SURF is also current for the Hunter and Mid North Coast. Please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/warnings/.
Locations which may be affected include Port Macquarie, Taree, Kempsey, Gloucester, Forster, Seal Rocks, Barrington Tops, Wingham and Yarrowitch.
83.6 mm was recorded at Careys Peak (Barrington Tops) in the 6 hours to 10:30 pm.
79 mm was recorded at Mount Barrington in the 6 hours to 10:30 pm.
70 km/h sustained winds wind a 90 km/h wind gust were recorded at Norah Head around 9:30 pm.
68 km/h sustained winds were recorded at Nobby's Signal Station around 8:30 pm.
130 mm was recorded at Port Macquarie in the 6 hours to 3:40 pm.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS are possible between The Entrance to south of Port Macquarie, extending to south of Coffs Harbour Tuesday morning. These conditions may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
Locations which may be affected include Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Newcastle and The Entrance.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across the Manning and Gloucester River catchments from overnight Monday into Tuesday and over the next few days. This is likely to result in river and creek level rises. Major flooding is possible along the Gloucester River at Gloucester from Tuesday morning. Minor to moderate flooding is possible along the Manning River at Wingham, Taree and Croki Wharf from Tuesday morning.

Minor to moderate flooding may occur along the Manning River.
The Manning River at Wingham is currently at 1.64 metres and rising, below the minor flood level (4.90 m).
The Manning River at Wingham may exceed the minor flood level early Tuesday morning. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (8.90 m) Tuesday afternoon. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
The Manning River at Taree is currently at 0.73 metres and rising, below the minor flood level (1.80 m).
The Manning River at Taree may exceed the minor flood level (1.80 m) late Tuesday morning. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (2.40 m) late Tuesday afternoon. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
The next warning will be issued by 5:00 am EST Tuesday.

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT MAITLAND TUESDAY EVENING AND AT WOLLOMBI AND BULGA OVERNIGHT TUESDAY
Moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast across the Hunter River catchment over the next few days. This is likely to result in river and creek level rises, where moderate flooding is possible along the Wollombi Brook at Wollombi and Bulga and along the Hunter River at Maitland.
A Flood Watch and a Severe Weather Warning are current for the Hunter River catchment.
The situation is being closely monitored, and the warning will be update as required.
Wollombi Brook:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Wollombi Brook.
The Wollombi Brook at Wollombi is currently at 1.93 metres and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Wollombi Brook at Wollombi may exceed the minor flood level (6.70 m) Tuesday afternoon. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (8.60 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, with forecast rainfall.
The Wollombi Brook at Bulga is currently at 1.31 metres and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Wollombi Brook at Bulga may exceed the minor flood level (3.00 m) Tuesday afternoon. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (3.70 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, with forecast rainfall.
Lower Hunter:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Lower Hunter.
The Hunter River at Maitland (Belmore Bridge) is currently at 2.17 metres and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Hunter River at Maitland (Belmore Bridge) may exceed the minor flood level (5.90 m) Tuesday morning. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (8.90 m) from Tuesday evening, with forecast rainfall.

MINOR TO MODERATE FLOODING LIKELY IN PARTS OF THE NORTHERN RIVERS, HUNTER AND MID NORTH COAST FROM MONDAY EVENING, WITH ISOLATED MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE
A coastal trough is positioned about the southern Mid North Coast, and is forecast to slowly track northwards into Tuesday. This trough is expected to bring multiple days of widespread moderate to heavy rainfall about central parts of the NSW coast and is likely to cause minor to moderate flooding from Monday evening.
Catchments in the Flood Watch area are relatively wet.
The exact location and timing of the heaviest falls is uncertain. However, isolated major flooding, alongside localised river level rises, and flash flooding are likely within the areas of heaviest rainfall.
Flood Classes (minor, moderate, major) are only defined for catchments where the Bureau provides a flood warning service.
A severe weather warning is current for Mid North Coast and parts of Hunter, Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts.

The Myall River at Bulahdelah is currently at 1.36 metres and rising, below the minor flood level (3.00 m).
The Myall River at Bulahdelah may reach the minor flood level (3.00 m) overnight Monday into Tuesday.
