Major Flood Warning For The Haughton River Catchment

RENEWED MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT GIRU TUESDAY AFTERNOON
Renewed river and creek level rises are being observed across the Haughton River catchment following additional rainfall during Monday and early Tuesday morning. A peak is now around Powerline and is expected to arrive at Giru Tuesday afternoon, with a height below the level of the peak observed last Saturday 8 February.
Further storms and periods of heavy rainfall are forecast across the Haughton River catchment during the remainder of Tuesday before easing during Wednesday. The catchment remains wet and will respond to further rainfall. This situation is being closely monitored and the warning will be updated as required.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of the North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.

Major Creek:
Renewed rises are being observed along Major Creek, where minor flooding is occurring.
Haughton River:
Major flooding is possible along the Haughton River.
The Haughton River at Giru is currently at 2.28 metres and rising, above the moderate flood level (2.10 metres).
The Haughton River at Giru may peak near the major flood level (2.50 metres) around Tuesday afternoon.

MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT APLIN WEIR AND MT BOHLE
FURTHER RAINFALL IS FORECAST FOR THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHICH MAY CAUSE RENEWED MODERATE FLOODING AT APLIN WEIR AND MT BOHLE
Minor flooding is occurring at Aplin Weir and Mt Bohle. Further storms and periods of heavy rainfall are forecast across the Ross and Bohle catchments during the remainder of Tuesday before easing during Wednesday. Catchments remain wet from recent prolonged rainfall. Any further localised heavy rainfall is expected to result in rapid river level rises and may lead to a return of more significant flooding across the Townsville area.
As advised by Townsville City Council, Ross River Dam will see controlled releases through the spillway. This will contribute to flows downstream in the Ross River.
Severe Weather Warning for Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.
The flood situation is being closely monitored and forecasts and warnings will be updated as required.

Ross River:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Ross River, however, localised heavy rainfall may result in renewed moderate flooding.
The Ross River at Aplin Weir is currently at 1.21 metres and steady, above the minor flood level (1.10 m).
The Ross River at Aplin Weir is likely to remain above the minor flood level (1.10 m) Tuesday. Further areas of localised heavy rainfall may cause renewed river level rises to the moderate flood level (1.60 m) during the next few days.

Bohle River:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Bohle River, however, localised heavy rainfall may result in renewed moderate flooding.
The Bohle River at Mt Bohle peaked at 4.26 metres around 08:30 am Tuesday and is currently at 4.16 metres and falling, above the minor flood level.
The Bohle River at Mt Bohle is likely to remain above the minor flood level (4.00 m) during Tuesday. Further areas of localised heavy rainfall may cause renewed river level rises to the moderate flood level (5.50 m) during the next few days.

Black River and Bluewater Creek:
River and creek levels are easing across the Black River and Bluewater Creek catchments during Tuesday. The catchments will remain very responsive to any localised heavy rainfall over the next few days, with renewed rises possible.

MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT HALIFAX AND GLENEAGLE FROM TUESDAY AFTERNOON
RENEWED MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT GAIRLOCH, INGHAM PUMP STATION AND ABERGOWRIE BRIDGE OVERNIGHT TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY
Heavy rainfall has been observed across the Herbert River catchment since Saturday morning. This rainfall has resulted in renewed river level rises and areas of minor to moderate flooding are occurring along the Herbert River, however at this stage, river levels are not expected to reach higher levels observed earlier this month. Further heavy rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast for the remainder of Tuesday and into Wednesday.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for parts of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.
The flood situation is being closely monitored and forecasts and warnings will be updated as required.

Herbert River to Nash's Crossing:
Major flooding may occur along the Herbert River to Nash's Crossing.
No recent observations are available for the Herbert River at Gleneagle, however, based on the nearby automatic gauge, the river level at Gleneagle is expected to be above the moderate flood level (8.50 m).
The Herbert River at Gleneagle may reach the major flood level (9.00 m) Tuesday afternoon. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

Herbert River downstream of Nash's Crossing:
Minor to moderate flooding is occurring along the Herbert River downstream of Nash's Crossing, however, forecast localised heavy rainfall may result in renewed moderate to major flooding.
The Herbert River at Abergowrie Bridge is currently at 7.75 metres and rising, above the minor flood level (6.00 m).
The Herbert River at Abergowrie Bridge is expected to remain above the minor flood level (6.00 m) during Tuesday. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (10.00 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

The Herbert River at Ingham Pump Station (Alert gauge) is currently at 9.49 metres and steady, below the minor flood level (10.00 m).
The Herbert River at Ingham Pump Station may reach the minor flood level (10.00 m) from Tuesday afternoon. Further areas of forecast heavy rainfall may cause further rises to around the moderate flood level (11.00 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

The Herbert River at Gairloch (Alert gauge) is currently at 8.99 metres and steady, below the minor flood level (9.50 m).
The Herbert River at Gairloch may reach the minor flood level (9.50 m) from Tuesday afternoon. Further areas of forecast heavy rainfall may cause further rises to around the moderate flood level (10.50 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

The Herbert River at Halifax is currently at 4.91 metres and steady, above the moderate flood level (4.50 m).
The Herbert River at Halifax may reach the major flood level (5.00 m) from Tuesday afternoon. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

INKERMAN BRIDGE LIKELY TO PEAK AROUND 11.5 METRES EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING, SIMILAR TO THE FEBRUARY 2009 FLOOD PEAK
MODERATE FLOODING EASING AT SELLHEIM (MACROSSAN BRIDGE)
PROLONGED FLOODING IN LOWER BURDEKIN EXPECTED TO REMAIN ABOVE MODERATE FLOOD LEVELS WELL INTO THURSDAY
Moderate flooding is easing at Sellheim (Macrossan Bridge) along the Upper Burdekin River, however renewed river level rises in parts of the upper catchment are likely to slow the rate of fall during Tuesday. Burdekin Falls Dam is nearing a moderate flood peak expected Tuesday afternoon.
Moderate flood peaks are expected along the lower Burdekin River from Tuesday evening, initially at Dalbeg, followed by Clare overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, and at Inkerman Bridge early Wednesday morning. The flood peak at Inkerman Bridge is likely to be very similar to that recorded during the February 2009 flood event, when the river level peaked at 11.55 metres. Moderate flooding is expected to continue downstream of the dam well into Thursday.
Major flooding is easing along the Cape River at Taemas, where the river level may fall below the major flood level overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. The Suttor River at St Anns is likely to fall below the moderate flood level Tuesday afternoon.
Further rainfall is forecast over parts of the catchment during the remainder of Tuesday and into Wednesday but significant rainfall totals are now less likely.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders and Central Coast and Whitsundays Forecast Districts.

Belyando and Suttor Rivers to Burdekin Falls Dam:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Belyando and Suttor Rivers to Burdekin Falls Dam.
The Suttor River at St Anns is currently at 6.65 metres and falling, above the moderate flood level (6.50 m).
The Suttor River at St Anns is likely to fall below the moderate flood level (6.50 m) Tuesday afternoon.

Cape River to Burdekin Falls Dam:
Major flooding is occurring along the Cape River to Burdekin Falls Dam.
The Cape River at Taemas is currently at 8.86 metres and falling, above the major flood level (8.00 m).
The Cape River at Taemas is likely to fall below the major flood level (8.00 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday.

Burdekin River to Burdekin Falls Dam:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Burdekin River to Burdekin Falls Dam.
The Burdekin River at Sellheim is currently at 14.75 metres and falling, with moderate flooding.
The Burdekin River at Sellheim is likely to remain above or around the moderate flood level (14.00 m) for much of Tuesday.

The Burdekin River at Burdekin Dam is currently at 6.63 metres and rising slowly, above the moderate flood level (5.50 m).
The Burdekin River at Burdekin Dam is likely to peak around 6.70 metres Tuesday afternoon, with moderate flooding. The river level is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (5.50 m) for much of Wednesday.

Burdekin River downstream of Burdekin Falls Dam:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Burdekin River downstream of Burdekin Falls Dam.
The Burdekin River at Dalbeg is currently at 18.38 metres and rising, above the moderate flood level (15.00 m).
The Burdekin River at Dalbeg is likely to peak near 18.60 metres Tuesday evening, with moderate flooding. The river level is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (15.00 m) well into Thursday.

The Burdekin River at Clare is currently at 14.80 metres and rising, above the moderate flood level (13.00 m).
The Burdekin River at Clare is likely to peak near 15.40 metres overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, with moderate flooding. The river level is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (13.00 m) well into Thursday.

The Burdekin River at Inkerman Bridge was estimated to be at approximately 11.13 metres around 10:00 am Tuesday and rising slowly, above the moderate flood level (10.00 m).
The Burdekin River at Inkerman Bridge is likely to peak near 11.50 metres early Wednesday morning, with moderate flooding. This is very similar to the flood peak recorded during the February 2009 flood event, when the river level peaked at 11.55 metres. The river level is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (10.00 m) well into Thursday.

for Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rainfall is possible across northern Queensland today, easing tonight.

Weather Situation
A low east of Georgetown embedded in the monsoon trough is expected to move slowly east towards the Townsville and Cassowary coasts today. Enhanced rainfall due to showers and isolated embedded thunderstorms is possible over northeastern Queensland for the remainder of today before drier air moves into the area overnight tonight. Extremely wet soils and river catchments are leading to higher than normal vulnerability to flash flooding.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is still possible in showers and thunderstorms for coastal and inland parts between Proserpine and Tully for the remainder of today, more likely over the Cassowary and Townsville coasts this afternoon. Isolated six-hourly rainfall totals between 100 to 150 mm are possible. Isolated 24-hourly rainfall totals up to 200 mm are possible, mainly between Townsville and Cardwell.
Rainfall is then forecast to ease across the warning area during this evening as the low moves into the Coral Sea.
Heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.

Locations which may be affected include Bowen, Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Ayr and Proserpine.

* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
