Initial Minor Flood Warning For The Avon River

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT STRATFORD MONDAY AFTERNOON
Minor flooding may develop along the Avon River at Stratford during Monday afternoon with the combination of upstream flows and forecast rainfall.
Widespread rainfall totals of 60 to 160 mm have been recorded across the Avon River catchment in the 48 hours to 9:00 am Monday. Further periods of heavy rainfall are possible across the catchment during Monday.
A severe weather warning is current for heavy rainfall for East Gippsland and parts of West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts

Avon River:
Minor flooding may occur along the Avon River.

The Avon River at Stratford is currently at 1.23 metres and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Avon River at Stratford may reach the minor flood level (4.50 m) Monday afternoon.

Flood Safety Advice:
SES advises that all community members should:
Never walk, ride or drive through floodwater,
Never allow children to play in floodwater,
Stay away from waterways and stormwater drains during and after heavy rain,
Keep well clear of fallen power lines
Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks, and heavy rainfall increases the potential for landslides and debris across roads.}

Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for East Gippsland and parts of West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:31 am Monday, 10 February 2025.

Periods of heavy rainfall possible through Gippsland during today.

Weather Situation
A developing upper low over NSW combined with a very moist east to southeasterly flow will generate conditions favourable for heavy rainfall across much of Gippsland during today.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
East Gippsland and West and South Gippsland
Periods of HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING are possible over parts of Gippsland today, becoming less likely through the overnight period into Tuesday. Scattered six-hourly rainfall totals between 30 and 70 mm are possible, with isolated totals of 120 mm possible.
Locations which may be affected include Sale, Maffra, Bairnsdale, Orbost, Buchan and Mallacoota.
- 107.8mm of rainfall has been recorded at Mt Moornapa in the last 24hours to 9am Monday.
- 101.4mm of rainfall has been recorded at Orbost in the last 24hours to 9am Monday.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEDT Monday.
