Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for Central and parts of East Gippsland, South West, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and Wimmera Forecast Districts.

Damaging wind gusts continuing this evening.

Weather Situation
A low pressure system in the Bight is extending a cold front over Victoria this evening. Vigorous west to northwesterly winds are developing ahead of this front, impacting alpine, western and central parts of the state this evening. Winds are then forecast to ease during Wednesday morning, although blustery showers remain possible in western parts of the state with southwesterly winds behind the front.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, South West, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and Wimmera
For NORTHEASTERN RANGES and EAST GIPPSLAND: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 65 to 75 km/h with peak gusts of around 120 km/h are occurring and remain possible tonight over alpine areas above 1400 metres, with BLIZZARD conditions forecast to develop this evening. Areas below 1400 metres may also see peak gusts of around 100 km/h this evening.
Damaging winds are then forecast to ease below warning thresholds during Wednesday morning.
For the WIMMERA, SOUTH WEST, CENTRAL and WEST GIPPSLAND: Strong west to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are possible in showers and thunderstorms this evening over the Grampians and parts of the South West and Central districts, including Melbourne, then extending to western Gippsland later tonight.
Damaging winds are then forecast to ease below warning thresholds over central areas and west Gippsland later tonight, although possible DAMAGING WIND GUSTS may continue over the Grampians and coastal parts of south Gippsland into Wednesday morning behind the front.
A separate warning for ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES is current for the entire Victorian coast. Please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/warnings/
Locations which may be affected include Horsham, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Stawell, Wonthaggi, Bacchus Marsh, Daylesford and Frankston.
Sustained 89 km/h winds were recorded at Mount Gellibrand around 4:00 pm, with a 111 km/h wind gust at 4:35 pm.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Aireys Inlet at 4:17 pm.
111 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mount William at 3:48 pm.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Horsham at 2:08 pm.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Warrnambool Airport at 12:42 pm.
Sustained 74 km/h winds were recorded at Mount Hotham around 9:00 am with a 120 km/h wind gust at 9:05 am.
93 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mount Hotham Airport at 8:41 am.
Sustained 70 km/h winds were recorded at Mount Buller around 8:30 am with a 113 km/h wind gust at 8:36 am.
Sustained 65 km/h winds were recorded at Falls Creek Airport around 12:50 am with a 101 km/h wind gust at 12:38 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEST Tuesday.

Warning to Sheep Graziers

for Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Tuesday and Wednesday. Areas likely to be affected include the Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts and parts of the Mallee and East Gippsland forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 11:00 pm EST Tuesday.
