TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 13
Issued at 08:45 AM WST on Tuesday 11 February 2025
Headline:
Tropical low (18U) is developing as it moves south and is expected to impact the east Pilbara or west Kimberley coast later this week.
Areas Affected:
Warning zone: None.
Watch zone: Beagle Bay to Whim Creek, including Port Hedland and Broome
Cancelled zone: Beagle Bay to Cape Leveque.
Details of Tropical Low 18U at 8:00 am AWST:
Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 45 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 85 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 75 kilometres of 15.8 degrees South 120.6 degrees East, estimated to be 295 kilometres northwest of Broome and 255 kilometres west northwest of Cape Leveque.
Movement: south southwest at 9 kilometres per hour.
A tropical low (18U), currently located to the northwest of Broome, is expected to move south and slowly develop over the next few days. There is still some uncertainty in the track and intensity of 18U however it seems more likely that 18U will now impact the east Pilbara or west Kimberley coast as a severe tropical cyclone later this week.
Hazards:
Gales with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 kilometres per hour may develop along the coast between Beagle Bay and Whim Creek later Wednesday or Thursday. DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS of up to 140 kilometres per hour may develop between Bidyadanga and Port Hedland during Thursday as 18U moves closer to the coast. Locally heavy falls may develop along the coast between Cape Leveque and Port Hedland during Wednesday or Thursday. The slow movement of the system as it approaches the coast may result in very high falls near the track. Refer to Flood Watch for further information. Abnormally high tides are possible between Cape Leveque and Port Hedland on Wednesday but sea levels should not exceed the highest tide of the year. Higher tides may occur as the system nears the coast.

This Flood Watch provides early advice of possible flooding within the specified catchments.
Flood Watch For The De Grey River And Parts Of Sandy Desert Catchments
Issued at 12:08 PM WST on Monday 10 February 2025
Flood Watch Number: 3
FLOODING POSSIBLE FOR THE DE GREY RIVER AND PARTS OF SANDY DESERT FROM TUESDAY
A tropical low is forming off the west Kimberley coast. The low is forecast to move southwest parallel to the west Kimberley coast and potentially develop into a tropical cyclone early Wednesday. The system is then forecast to move further to the southwest towards the Pilbara coast during Wednesday.
A Tropical Cyclone Advice is current for Western Australia.
Catchments across the Flood Watch area, particularly towards the coast, have become wet with recent rainfall.
Widespread daily rainfall totals of 30-40 mm are forecast around the southern Kimberley Coast for Monday and Tuesday, with isolated higher totals in excess of 80 mm possible. Higher daily totals are possible around the Pilbara Coast later in the week depending on the development and track of the low.
Forecast rainfall in the flood watch area is expected to result in river rises, areas of flooding and may adversely affect road conditions. Roads may become impassable and some communities may become isolated. Significant disruption of transportation network and extensive road closures are possible.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
De Grey River
Sandy Desert
West Kimberley Rivers
This flood watch is available by dialling 1300 659 213. For more information on the Flood Watch Service visit http://www.bom.gov.au/water/floods/floodWarningServices.shtml
Flood Safety Advice:
Current river levels are available from Department of Water and Environmental Regulation at www.water.wa.gov.au/maps-and-data/monitoring/river-level-monitoring
DFES advises people and communities to be aware that flooding is possible and be prepared to relocate equipment and livestock. Watch water levels. Travellers need to be aware that road conditions may be adversely affected and travel plans may need to be reconsidered. Do not drive into water of unknown depth and velocity.
Community information is available from DFES at www.emergency.wa.gov.au/}
