Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.

Damaging wind gusts over the alpine peaks, spreading to southern coastal ranges in the morning and to the adjacent coastal area by late evening, including Wollongong.
Weather Situation
A trough ahead of a complex low in the Bight has brought damaging wind gusts about the alpine peaks during the night. These winds are expected to spread to the coastal ranges during the morning. A second frontal system is expected later today and into Wednesday, with renewed windy conditions likely across the same area, and including coastal portions of the South Coast and Illawarra.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
ALPINE PEAKS ABOVE 1900M: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peak gusts around 110 km/h.
ELSEWHERE ABOVE 1400M: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast to develop this morning, with blizzard conditions forecast to develop from this afternoon in western parts of the Snowy Mountains. The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
For the northern SOUTH COAST and ILLAWARRA: Strong west-northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS at or above 90 km/h are possible from late evening and into the morning hours of Wednesday.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS are also possible with showers and thunderstorms over the ranges inland of the coast and about the coastal areas in the afternoon.
Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Bombala, Kiama and Ulladulla.
Sustained winds above 80 km/h have been observed at Thredbo Top Station since 3 pm Monday.
93 km/h wind gust was recorded at Cabramurra at 2:05 am.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEST Tuesday.
