Thunderstorm with possible damaging wind gusts west of Newcastle.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Maitland/Cessnock, Greater Newcastle and Gosford/Wyong
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 8:15 pm, a severe thunderstorm likely to produce damaging winds was detected near Abermain and Mannering Park. This thunderstorm is moving towards the east. It is forecast to affect Newcastle City, Maitland, Raymond Terrace and Belmont by 8:45 pm and Medowie and Williamtown by 9:15 pm.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for parts of the Mid North Coast, Hunter, North West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western districts.
The next warning is due to be issued by 9:15 pm.

A surface trough through NSW is triggering thunderstorms in a hot, unstable air mass, leading to the risk of damaging wind gusts.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, North West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Tamworth, Moree, Scone, Maitland, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Collarenebri, Gloucester, Bulahdelah, Morisset and Singleton.
Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Central Tablelands and Central West Slopes and Plains districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.

Hot and dry conditions combining with fresh and gusty west to northwesterly winds are expected to bring increased fire dangers to central and northern NSW today ahead of a south to southwesterly wind change moving through in the afternoon and evening.
