Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for parts of South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Southern Tablelands Forecast Districts.

Severe risk easing near the coast, damaging easterly winds possible inland tonight.

Weather Situation
A coastal trough is located offshore of the Illawarra this afternoon, directing a fresh south to southeasterly flow with showers onto the coast. While the immediate threat of heavy rainfall and damaging winds near the coast has eased, there is some chance during Saturday the trough will re-approach the Illawarra and Sydney coasts with some renewed risks.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes and Snowy Mountains
DAMAGING EAST TO SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range from this evening.
Damaging winds are expected to ease below severe thresholds by late Saturday morning.
In the event that heavy rainfall becomes a renewed threat near the Illawarra or Sydney coasts during Saturday, a Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued.

* Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.

Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southeasterly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the South Coast forecast district and parts of the Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.

Warnings for Sunday 18 January

Hazardous Surf Warning for the following areas:

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.

Damaging Surf for NSW

Weather Situation
A low moving off the coast of NSW is bringing strong to gale force southeasterly winds, and elevated waves.
DAMAGING SURF for the following areas:
Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast
DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS which may lead to coastal erosion and localised damage to coastal infrastructure are expected between South of Cronulla and Batemans Bay from Friday evening, particularly for southeast facing beaches.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
Damaging surf conditions are expected to ease during Saturday evening.
Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Batemans Bay, Kiama, Ulladulla, Bulli and Port Kembla.


The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't walk, ride or drive through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions.
