FLOODING NO LONGER EXPECTED AT TEMPE BRIDGE
River levels at Tempe Bridge are expected to remain below the minor flood level (1.30 m), after high tides caused minor flooding.

Cooks River:
No further flooding is expected in the Cooks River.

The Cooks River at Tempe Bridge is currently at 1.26 metres and falling, below the minor flood level (1.30m).

for Damaging Winds And Heavy Rainfall

for Mid North Coast and parts of Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Northern Tablelands and North West Slopes and Plains Forecast Districts.

Heavy rainfall and damaging winds developing today.

Weather Situation
A low pressure system has developed off of the northern NSW coast, resulting in rainfall about the Hunter and Mid North Coast as well as southerly winds along the coastal fringe from Sydney to Seal Rocks.
DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, North West Slopes and Plains and Northern Tablelands
Locally strong to DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible on exposed parts of the coast from Nowra to Seal Rocks, particularly for parts of the coastline facing towards the south. Winds are expected to increase during Friday morning, peaking in the afternoon and easing below warning thresholds by early Saturday morning.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for the northern Hunter and Mid North Coast districts today, with the rain rates expected to begin to increase early this afternoon and continue through to tomorrow. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 70 and 120 mm remain possible through to Saturday evening, particularly on elevated terrain.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

for DAMAGING SURF

for parts of Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra Forecast Districts.

Damaging Surf today and overnight about exposed parts of the coast

Weather Situation
A low pressure system and associated trough developed offshore of the Hunter Coast early this morning and are expected to track north throughout the day. Strong south to southeasterly winds are likely to drive large, powerful southerly waves today and overnight tonight.
DAMAGING SURF for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan and Illawarra
VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is likely about exposed coasts between Ulladulla and Smoky Cape today and tonight. These conditions are likely to persist between Port Hacking and Seal Rocks into early Saturday morning before steadily abating.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
Locations which may be affected include Port Kembla, Wollongong, Sydney, Terrigal, Norah Head, Newcastle, and Port Macquarie.
A separate Hazardous Surf Warning is also current.
A Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds and Heavy Rainfall is also current.
Flood Watches and Warnings are also current.

Hazardous Surf Warning for New South Wales

Weather Situation
Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.

Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast and Batemans Coast

Warnings for Saturday 18 January

Hazardous Surf Warning for the following areas:
Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast and Illawarra Coast

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
