Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall
for parts of Simpson and Barkly districts.
Issued at 9:29 pm Wednesday, 25 February 2026.
Heavy rainfall risk continuing in the far southeast.
Weather Situation
A slow-moving tropical low is situated over the far southeast of the NT and is expected to drift slowly back to the north over the Simpson district through tonight and Thursday. Rich tropical moisture surrounding this system is continuing to bring a risk of heavy rainfall.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Barkly and Simpson
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for parts of the Simpson district. Six hour rainfall totals between 25 and 75 mm are possible. 24 hour rainfall totals between 50 and 100 mm are possible.
These conditions also threaten cattle and other livestock.

Locations which may be affected include Simpson District east of Finke.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions deteriorate
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am ACST Thursday.

Possible heavy falls with thunderstorms in the Barkly and E Simpson Districts. Light to moderate S/SE winds in the Tanami, Lasseter and E Simpson Districts, tending NE/NW elsewhere.
