Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of Western, Upper Derwent Valley and South East Forecast Districts.
Issued at 8:24 pm Monday, 20 October 2025.
Damaging winds contracting to southern and mountain areas this evening.
Weather Situation
Vigorous westerly winds are expected to continue this evening across southern and mountain parts of the state as a cold front clears to the east, easing later this evening.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Western, Upper Derwent Valley and South East
For ELEVATED TERRAIN and EXPOSED FAR SOUTHERN TASMANIA: DAMAGING WESTERLY WINDS averaging 65 to 75 km/h with peak gusts around 115 km/h are occurring and expected to continue into the evening.
Winds have now eased below warning thresholds across much of the state including Hobart, with an expectation to ease throughout by late this evening.
Locations which may be affected include Geeveston, Dover and Huonville.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central North, Central Plateau and Midlands districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
157 km/h WIND GUST WAS RECORDED AT MAATSUYKER ISLAND AT 3:15 pm.
133 km/h wind gust was recorded at kunanyi (Mt Wellington) at 7:44 pm.
131 km/h wind gust was recorded at Scotts Peak Dam at 1:22 pm.
102 km/h wind gust was recorded at Cape Bruny at 6:59 pm.
98 km/h wind gust was recorded in Hobart (Ellerslie Road) at 5:35 pm.
Cancellation for the following areas:
East Coast,North East,Central North,Midlands,Central Plateau,North West Coast
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEDT Tuesday.
