Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:43 am Tuesday, 16 September 2025.

Damaging winds continuing this morning.

Weather Situation
A cold front is currently moving through eastern parts of Victoria, with damaging north to northwesterly winds contracting to the east. The front has slowed overnight, and damaging winds will continue until the late morning.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts around 100 km/h are expected to continue this morning. Peak gusts about the alpine peaks may reach around 115 km/h. Winds are expected to ease throughout the late morning.
Locations which may be affected include Falls Creek, Dargo, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.
A wind gust of 98 km/h at Mt Gellibrand at 1:47 pm
A wind gust of 96 km/h at Essendon Airport at 1:32 pm
A wind gust of 104 km/h at Melbourne airport at 1:31 pm, with sustained 76 km/h winds around 1:30 pm
A wind gust of 93 km/h at Point Cook at 12:25 pm
A wind gust of 91 km/h at Avalon Airport at 12:09 pm
A wind gust of 96 km/h at Kilmore Gap at 11:04 am
A wind gust of 115 km/h at Mount Hotham at 10:00 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEST Tuesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
