Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and South West Forecast Districts.

Damaging wind gusts easing during Wednesday morning with blizzard conditions about the alpine region.

Weather Situation
A cold front is clearing eastern Victoria while a trough approaches from the west. Vigorous westerly flow following this front is forecast to continue during Wednesday, turning southwesterly following the passage of the trough during the morning before easing during Wednesday evening.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, South West, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland
For NORTHEASTERN RANGES and EAST GIPPSLAND: DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are occurring and remain possible overnight about alpine areas above 1400 metres, with BLIZZARD conditions likely. Peak gusts may reach up to 120 km/h until early Wednesday morning.
Damaging winds are then forecast to ease below warning thresholds during Wednesday morning.
For the SOUTH WEST, CENTRAL and WEST AND SOUTH GIPPSLAND districts: Strong westerly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are possible in showers and thunderstorms.
Winds are forecast to ease below warning thresholds during the early hours of Wednesday morning, though squally showers are expected to continue across much of Victoria until Wednesday evening.
A separate warning for ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES is current for the entire Victorian coast. Please refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/warnings/
Locations which may be affected include Wonthaggi, Falls Creek, Dargo, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Wimmera district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

94 km/h wind gust was recorded at Cape Otway at 9:57 pm Tuesday.
96 km/h wind gust was recorded at Port Fairy at 9:16 pm Tuesday.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Rhyll at 6:11 pm Tuesday.
109 km/h wind gust was recorded at Aireys Inlet at 5:17 pm Tuesday.
Sustained 89 km/h winds were recorded at Mount Gellibrand around 4:00 pm, with a 111 km/h wind gust at 4:35 pm Tuesday.
111 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mount William at 3:48 pm Tuesday.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Horsham at 2:08 pm Tuesday.
91 km/h wind gust was recorded at Warrnambool Airport at 12:42 pm Tuesday.
Sustained 74 km/h winds were recorded at Mount Hotham around 9:00 am with a 120 km/h wind gust at 9:05 am Tuesday.
93 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mount Hotham Airport at 8:41 am Tuesday.
Sustained 70 km/h winds were recorded at Mount Buller around 8:30 am with a 113 km/h wind gust at 8:36 am Tuesday.
Sustained 65 km/h winds were recorded at Falls Creek Airport around 12:50 am with a 101 km/h wind gust at 12:38 am Tuesday.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

for ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES

for parts of Central, East Gippsland, South West and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Abnormally High Tides for Victoria

Weather Situation
A deep low pressure system moving to the south of Tasmania tonight will move into the Tasman Sea on Wednesday. Strong to gale-force northwesterly winds will shift southwesterly during Wednesday morning. This is expected to bring strong winds, elevated surf and sea levels across the state.
ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, South West and West and South Gippsland
ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES may lead to sea water flooding of low-lying coastal areas for the entire Victorian coast, including Port Phillip. Tides are likely to rise WELL ABOVE the normal high tide mark during this evening's high tide. Tides are again expected to rise WELL ABOVE the normal high tide mark during Wednesday afternoon and evening high tide.

Locations which may be affected include Geelong, Melbourne, Portland, Port Fairy, Inverloch, Port Albert, Silverleaves, Barwon Heads, Frankston and Lakes Entrance.


The Victoria State Emergency Service and Life Saving Victoria advise that people should be aware of the following:
* Do not walk, ride or drive through flood waters.
* Stay away from beaches, tidal rivers and creeks.
* If you have a boat or water craft, haul out if possible or check your moorings are secure.
* Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
* Stay informed - monitor weather warnings and forecasts at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency app, website and hotline (1800 226 226).

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Tuesday and Wednesday. Areas likely to be affected include the Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts and parts of the Mallee and East Gippsland forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
