Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for Damaging Winds

for parts of East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Damaging wind gusts with a line of showers and thunderstorms moving through northeast Victoria and Gippsland.

Weather Situation
A front moving through eastern parts of the state is triggering a line of showers and thunderstorms which is moving swiftly towards the east. With strong winds aloft present across the warning area some of these storms are capable of producing damaging wind gusts.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Bairnsdale, Orbost, Bright, Falls Creek, Dargo and Buchan.
Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Central, Northern Country and North Central districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
A 93 km/h gust was recorded at Eildon Fire Tower at 11:48 am.
A 94 km/h gust was recorded at Latrobe Valley at 10:51 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

for Damaging, Locally Destructive Winds

for parts of East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS ABOUT ALPINE PEAKS TODAY.

Weather Situation
Increased northwesterly flow associated with the passage of a cold front today is bringing damaging wind to elevated areas in the east. Showers and isolated thunderstorms this morning and afternoon also pose a wind gust risk.
DAMAGING, LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS for the following areas:
East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland
FOR ELEVATED AREAS ABOVE 1400 METRES: DAMAGING TO LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS, averaging 60 to 80 km/h with peak gusts of 110 km/h are likely through this morning and afternoon, and possibly in excess of 125 km/h with shower or thunderstorm activity. Winds are forecast to ease by early evening as the front moves through.
Locations which may be affected include Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.
128 KM/H GUST WAS RECORDED AT FALLS CREEK AT 11:47 AM.
106 km/h gust was recorded at Mt Hotham at 11:40 am.
98 km/h gust was recorded at Mt Buller at 10:17 am.

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and westerly winds are expected during Wednesday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
