Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for Central, East Gippsland, North Central, West and South Gippsland and parts of South West, North East, Wimmera and Northern Country Forecast Districts.

Issued at 5:52 pm Wednesday, 22 October 2025.

Damaging winds continuing over southern and mountain areas, easing from the west.

Weather Situation
A deep low pressure system in Bass Strait located south of the Mornington Peninsula will continue to move rapidly eastwards through Bass Strait this evening, then weaken and clear eastwards into the Tasman Sea overnight. Vigorous northwest to southwesterly winds associated with this system are expected to continue across the warning area this evening, gradually easing from the west.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, South West, Northern Country, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and Wimmera
Strong northwest to southwest winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING GUSTS of 90 to 100 km/h are currently occurring over central and western Victoria including the MELBOURNE area, with gusts to 110 km/h about elevated and exposed locations. These winds are expected to increase through Gippsland and eastern Victoria this evening.
Conditions are expected to continue easing from the west this evening, including Melbourne over the next couple of hours, then clearing eastern and mountain areas by Thursday morning.
Locations which may be affected include Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Traralgon and Bairnsdale.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Mallee district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

91 km/h at Melbourne Airport at 5:02 pm.
91 km/h at Essendon Airport at 4:57 pm.
96 km/h at St Kilda Harbour at 4:16 pm.
95 km/h at Laverton at 3:42 pm.
95 km/h at Avalon Airport at 3:40 pm.
93 km/h at Aireys Inlet at 3:13 pm.
91 km/h at Port Fairy at 3:00 pm.
120 km/h at Mt Gellibrand 2:58 pm.
111 km/h at Mt Hotham at 2:32 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEDT Wednesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
