Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for Central, East Gippsland, South West, Northern Country, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland, Wimmera and parts of Mallee Forecast Districts.

Issued at 3:08 pm Wednesday, 22 October 2025.

Damaging winds spreading to the east this afternoon, including Melbourne.

Weather Situation
A deep low pressure system in Bass Strait just southwest of Cape Otway will continue to move rapidly eastwards through Bass Strait today, then weaken and clear eastwards into the Tasman Sea overnight. Vigorous northwest to southwesterly winds will continue to impact much of Victoria during Wednesday, particularly with showers and thunderstorms.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, Mallee, South West, Northern Country, North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and Wimmera
Strong northwest to westerly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING GUSTS to 100 km/h are currently occurring over western and central Victoria including the MELBOURNE area and about the eastern ranges, then will extend to the rest of the warning area in the east during the remainder of the afternoon and early evening.
DAMAGING west to southwesterly winds averaging 60 to 80 km/h with gusts to 100 to 120 km/h are possible over the far southwest during the afternoon and over southern parts of the Central district including Geelong and the Mornington Peninsula until early this evening.
Conditions are expected to ease over the north and west later Wednesday afternoon, over central parts in the evening and over the southeast during Thursday morning.
Destructive wind gusts are no longer expected about the coast west of Port Fairy.
Locations which may be affected include Horsham, Warrnambool, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Wangaratta, Traralgon and Bairnsdale.
Significant wind gusts to 2:45 pm AEDT:
115 km/h at Mt Gellibrand at 2:44 pm.
111 km/h at Mt Hotham at 2:32 pm.
94 km/h at Mt Buller at 2:19 pm.
91 km/h at Portland at 1:54 pm.
91 km/h at Stawell at 1:17 pm.
91 km/h at Warracknabeal at 1:05 pm.
110 km/h at Mt William at 11:18 pm.
94 km/h at Warrnambool at 10:26 pm.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 pm AEDT Wednesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Warning to Sheep Graziers

for Wimmera, North East, South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts

Issued at 11:01 AM EDT on Wednesday 22 October 2025

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Wimmera, North East, South West, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and showers and strong southwesterly winds are expected during Wednesday and Thursday. Areas likely to be affected include the South West forecast district and parts of the Wimmera, North East, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5:00 pm EDT Wednesday.
