Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds And Heavy Rainfall

for East Gippsland and parts of Central, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Damaging southerly winds, heavy rainfall and possible blizzard conditions developing over parts of the state on Friday.

Weather Situation
A vigorous coastal low has developed offshore of the southern NSW coast, leading to damaging southerly winds developing over parts of the central ranges and east of the state today. Heavy rainfall is also expected to develop over parts of East Gippsland, as these winds combine with ample moisture to rise over topography. This may also bring blizzard conditions to alpine areas. The low will move further offshore later on Friday, leading to an easing of conditions across the state.
DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland
DAMAGING SOUTHERLY WIND GUSTS with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are occurring over parts of the central coastline this morning, including MELBOURNE area. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS are also expected to develop over parts of the central ranges and east before sunrise. Wind gusts may reach 100 km/h about the East Gippsland coast.
DAMAGING SOUTHERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely about alpine areas above 1600 metres from this morning.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected to develop over the elevated terrain of East Gippsland on Friday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 60 to 80 mm are likely.
BLIZZARD conditions are forecast over alpine areas above 1600 metres this morning and into the early afternoon.
Conditions are expected to ease below warning thresholds by Friday evening.

Locations which may be affected include Geelong, Melbourne, Wonthaggi, Orbost, Daylesford, Frankston, Falls Creek, Buchan, Kyneton, Rosebud, Mallacoota and Mt Hotham.
109 km/h wind gust was recorded at South Channel Island at 1:41 am.
94 km/h wind gust was recorded at St Kilda Harbour at 2:10 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, North Central, North East, South West, Central, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southerly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the North Central, North East, West and South Gippsland and East Gippsland forecast districts and parts of the Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, South West and Central forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

FLOODING IS POSSIBLE AT CHANDLERS CREEK, WEERAGUA AND THE GORGE FROM FRIDAY AFTERNOON
A low pressure system off the New South Wales South Coast is forecast to bring heavy rainfall, increasing overnight Thursday into Friday. Flooding may develop from Friday afternoon.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for heavy rainfall for East Gippsland.

Bemm River:
Flooding is possible along the Bemm River from Friday afternoon.
Cann River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Cann River from Friday afternoon.
The Cann River at Chandlers Creek is currently at 0.38 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Cann River at Chandlers Creek may exceed the minor flood level (2.00 m) Friday afternoon with forecast rain. Further rises are possible.

The Cann River at Weeragua is currently at 1.32 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Cann River at Weeragua may exceed the minor flood level (3.00 m) Friday afternoon with forecast rain. Further rises are possible.

Genoa River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Genoa River from Friday afternoon.
The Genoa River at The Gorge is currently at 0.65 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Genoa River at The Gorge may exceed the minor flood level (1.90 m) Friday afternoon with forecast rain. Further rises are possible.

A low developing off the east coast of Australia on Thursday and Friday will bring significant rainfall across the Snowy River catchment and minor flooding is possible at Basin Creek from Friday morning.

Minor flooding possible along the Snowy River downstream of McKillops Bridge.
The Snowy River at Basin Creek is currently at 2.04 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Snowy River at Basin Creek may exceed the minor flood level (3.50 m) Friday morning, with forecast rainfall. Further rises are possible.
