TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST
Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of Lower West and South West districts.
Issued at 10:06 am Wednesday, 25 March 2026.
Damaging winds developing about the Darling Scarp tonight.
Weather Situation
A high pressure system southwest of the state, together with a trough off the west coast, will generate a vigorous easterly airstream over the Darling Scarp tonight.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Lower West and South West
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible over the warning area from late this evening, most likely about the hills and foothills on Thursday morning between 2:00 am and 10:00 am AWST. Winds are expected to ease below warning thresholds by midday Thursday.
Gusty easterly winds are relatively common this time of year, however winds are likely to be strong and may cause damage to property and make road conditions hazardous. Easterly winds of this strength generally occur around 1 to 3 times per year.
Locations which may be affected include Gingin, Harvey, Armadale, Dwellingup, Ellenbrook, Kalamunda, Midland, Mundaring and Pinjarra.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* If outside find safe shelter away from trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams.
* Close your curtains and blinds, and stay inside away from windows.
* Unplug electrical appliances and do not use land line telephones if there is lightning.
* If boating, swimming or surfing leave the water.
* Be alert and watch for hazards on the road such as fallen power lines and loose debris.
* Keep away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
* Be careful of fallen trees, damaged buildings and debris.
* Be careful of fallen power lines. They are dangerous and should always be treated as live.
* Assess your home, car and property for damage.
* If damage has occurred take photos and contact your insurance company to organise permanent repairs.
* If your home or property has significant damage, like a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the SES on 132 500.
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AWST Wednesday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and Department of Fire and Emergency Services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.
