  • Dynamic week of weather ahead for Australia

Source Weatherzone Mon 26 May 2025

Destructive winds, flooding rain, thunderstorms and snow will all affect Australia this week as several systems combine to bring a huge week of weather across the country. The week is starting off with a huge northwest cloud band draped across Australia and a powerful cold front and associated low pressure system slamming into the country’s southern states. Wild winds and wintry weather in the south The front and low in the south are going to drive rain, snow and damaging to destructive winds across parts of southern and southeastern Australia on Monday and Tuesday. This system will cause severe weather in several states, including damaging to destructive winds that are likely to bring down trees. It will also bring showers to parts of SA, Vic, Tas, NSW and the ACT. While this rain will affect some flooded areas in eastern NSW, it won’t be anywhere near as heavy as last week’s deluge.   Image: Modelled wind gusts at 1pm AEST on Monday, June 26. Cold air behind the front will deliver a bout of late-autumn snow to the mainland alps on Monday and Tuesday. This frigid airmass will also send shivers across a broad area of southeastern Australia as temperatures plummet early in the week. As this low pressure system moves out over the Tasman Sea on Tuesday and Wednesday, strengthening southerly winds will whip up a large swell along the east coasts of Tas, Vic and NSW through the middle of the week. Heavy rain across the outback While southern Australia is enduring a blast of wintry weather this week, partes of northern and central Australia will cop heavy rain from a big northwest cloud band. Northwest cloud bands are a typical feature of Australia's weather at this time of year. They result when tropical moisture flows over Australia from the Indian Ocean, producing a huge cloud band oriented from northwest to southeast. This week’s northwest cloud band will cause rain to spread over northern WA and large areas of the NT and Qld, spanning an area roughly 3000 km in length. This rain could cause outback flooding, which may cut off roads and isolated remote communities. Storms brewing for the west Australia’s west will see clouds build towards the end of the week as a low pressure system and associated trough trigger several days of showers and thunderstorms from Thursday to Saturday. This stormy weather could affect Perth, with severe storms a risk for the city and surrounding areas on Friday. There are also early signs that another, stronger frontal system will hit the west coast on Sunday or Monday, possibly bringing more showers, storms and blustery winds. This week’s dynamic mix of weather will see severe weather impacting multiple states. This will be compounded by clean-up efforts continuing over areas of eastern NSW that were hit with heavy rain and flooding last week. Be sure to check the latest severe weather and flood warnings in your area throughout the week and monitor road and rail conditions before travelling. - Weatherzone © Weatherzone 2025
