Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds

for South Coast, Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory and parts of Metropolitan, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.

Damaging winds developing over southeastern NSW including the ACT today, with possible blizzards over the Snowy Mountains.

Weather Situation
A vigorous coastal low has formed offshore of the southern NSW coast, with an expectation for damaging southerly winds to develop over parts of southeastern NSW including the ACT and the Sydney coast today. This may also bring blizzard conditions to alpine areas. Conditions will begin to ease later today and into early Saturday as the low moves further offshore.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory
DAMAGING SOUTHERLY WIND GUSTS with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely to develop over parts of the Snowy Mountains and South Coast from this morning, before spreading northwards into the remainder of the warning area during this afternoon. Wind gusts along the coastal fringe of the South Coast and Illawarra may reach 110 km/h this morning and during the afternoon, potentially up to 120 km/h at exposed southerly locations.
For ALPINE areas above 1900 m: DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h are possible from this morning and into the afternoon, with BLIZZARD conditions also possible.
Conditions are expected to ease below warning thresholds throughout by late this evening or early Saturday morning.
Separate Coastal Hazard Warnings for DAMAGING SURF and HAZARDOUS SURF are current. Flood warnings are also active for parts of the state. See https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts for details.
Locations which may be affected include parts of the Sydney coast, Wollongong, Nowra, Batemans Bay, Eden, Cooma and Bega.
118 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mallacoota (Victoria) at 10:07 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.

Damaging surf developing for central and southern coasts

Weather Situation
A vigorous coastal low offshore the southern New South Wales coast today will generate gale to storm force southerly winds and very large, powerful seas. The low is expected to move slowly east into the Tasman Sea and weaken during Saturday evening.
DAMAGING SURF for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast
DAMAGING SURF CONDITIONS which may lead to coastal erosion and localised damage to coastal infrastructure are likely between the NSW/VIC border and Seal Rocks, particularly for south facing beaches. Minor sea water flooding of low lying south facing coastal areas is also possible during the early Saturday morning high tide.
Beach conditions in these areas could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.
Damaging surf conditions are expected to ease later on Saturday.

Warning to Sheep Graziers for the following areas:
Hunter, Northern Tablelands, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Riverina, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts
Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, heavy rain and showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the Illawarra, South Coast, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory forecast districts and parts of the Hunter, Northern Tablelands, Central West Slopes & Plains and Riverina forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Hazardous Surf Warning for New South Wales

Weather Situation
Surf and swell conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as rock fishing, boating, and swimming in the following areas.

Warnings for Saturday 28 March

Hazardous Surf Warning for the following areas:
Byron Coast, Coffs Coast, Macquarie Coast, Hunter Coast, Sydney Coast, Illawarra Coast, Batemans Coast and Eden Coast

NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advise that:
People should consider staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas.
Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf.
Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage.
Boaters already on the water should carry the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket.
Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
