Detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for Large Hailstones And Damaging Winds

for parts of Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury, Gosford/Wyong and Sydney areas.

Issued at 5:01 pm Friday, 17 October 2025.

Severe thunderstorms continue to develop around Sydney and Gosford this afternoon.

LARGE HAILSTONES and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Blue Mountains/Hawkesbury, Gosford/Wyong and Sydney
The Bureau of Meteorology warns that, at 5:00 pm, severe thunderstorms likely to produce large hailstones and damaging winds were detected near Sydney Olympic Park, Calga and the Wollemi National Park north of Kurrajong. These thunderstorms are moving towards the east. They are forecast to affect Sydney City, Gosford, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and waters off Bondi Beach by 5:30 pm and St Albans, Mangrove Mountain and Upper Mangrove by 6:00 pm.
2 cm hailstones were reported at Engadine around 4:20 pm
Cancellation for the following areas:
Wollondilly/Wingecarribee,Wollongong

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
A more general severe thunderstorm warning is also current for the Hunter, Metropolitan, Central Tablelands and parts of the Mid North Coast, Illawarra, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western districts.

The next warning is due to be issued by 6:05 pm.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Severe storms continue this afternoon with damaging winds and large hail.

Weather Situation
A warm, moist and unstable environment is interacting with a surface trough to generate severe thunderstorms across eastern and northern parts of the state. Severe storms are likely to persist throughout the afternoon and continue into the early evening, ahead of an approaching southerly wind change that will move north along the coast during the early evening.
LARGE HAILSTONES, DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Mid North Coast, Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, Central Tablelands, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones and damaging winds over the next several hours in the Hunter, Metropolitan, Central Tablelands and parts of the Illawarra, North West Slopes and Plains, Central West Slopes and Plains and Upper Western districts. Locations which may be affected include Gosford, Sydney, Orange, Dubbo, Scone and Mudgee.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding over the next several hours in parts of the Mid North Coast district. Locations which may be affected include Taree, Port Macquarie, Kempsey, Urunga, Bellingen and Nambucca Heads.

3 cm hailstones were reported at Moorland around 3:15 pm

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
