Severe Weather Warning
for Damaging Winds
for parts of Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast Forecast Districts.

Damaging winds continue over coastal areas of southern NSW tonight.
Weather Situation
A vigorous coastal low has formed offshore of the southern NSW coast, which has resulted in numerous observations of damaging southerly winds over parts of southeastern NSW throughout today. Conditions will ease overnight and into early Saturday as the low continues to move offshore.
DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Metropolitan, Illawarra and South Coast
DAMAGING SOUTHWESTERLY WIND GUSTS of around 90-100 km/h remain possible along the coastal fringe of the South Coast and Illawarra and into southern portions of the Sydney Metropolitan coastline.
Conditions are expected to ease below warning thresholds overnight.
Separate Coastal Hazard Warnings for DAMAGING SURF and HAZARDOUS SURF are current. Flood warnings are also active for parts of the state. See https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts for details.
Locations which may be affected include parts of the Sydney coast, Wollongong, Nowra, Batemans Bay, Eden, Cooma and Bega.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Southern Tablelands, South West Slopes, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
A 115 km/h wind gust was recorded at Point Perpendicular (near Jervis Bay) at 4:23 pm.
A 119 km/h wind gust was recorded more recently at Montague Island Lighthouse at 4:23 pm.
A 130 km/h wind gust was recorded at Montague Island Lighthouse at 1:53 pm.
A 118 km/h wind gust was recorded at Green Cape at 11:41 am.
A 118 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mallacoota (Victoria) at 10:07 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Park your car under secure cover and away from trees, powerlines and drains.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
