Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for Daly and parts of Arnhem, Carpentaria and Gregory districts.

LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS OVER THE CENTRAL AND WESTERN TOP END CONTINUING TONIGHT AND INTO MONDAY.

Weather Situation
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is currently located over the western Arnhem district after crossing the eastern Top End coast earlier this morning. The system is expected to continue moving steadily west-southwestwards tonight and Monday, while remaining as a deep tropical low.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Daly, Arnhem, Carpentaria and Gregory
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for the central Top End, including Katherine, this afternoon, before shifting more into the Daly district this evening. These conditions may also develop about the DARWIN area from late this evening into Monday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 and 120 mm are likely. 24-hourly rainfall totals between 180 to 230 mm are likely.
Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is also possible north of Katherine this afternoon with six-hourly rainfall totals up to 180 mm. Isolated 24-hourly rainfall totals of 250 to 300 mm are possible.
Localised DAMAGING WIND GUSTS with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are possible in the warning area, more likely this afternoon and evening to the south of the system, and may develop through the DARWIN area from late this evening into Monday morning.
Further showers and thunderstorms are possible over the remainder of the Top End as the system contracts west.

121 mm was recorded at Central Arnhem Plateau in the 6 hours to 3:30 pm.

* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit

PROLONGED MAJOR FLOODING CONTINUING AT DALY RIVER POLICE STATION, WITH RENEWED RISES LIKELY
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is forecast to bring widespread heavy to locally intense rainfall to the parts of the Top End during Sunday into Monday. There is currently major flooding along the Daly River, and forecast rainfall is expected to prolong major flooding and likely cause renewed river level rises.
River levels at Daly River Police Station are expected to remain above major flood level for the remainder of Sunday into next week, with renewed level rises likely. The situation will be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End including the Daly River catchment. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and Severe Weather Warning are also current for parts of the Northern Territory.

Flooding likely along the Daly River above Douglas River.
Fergusson River:
Flooding likely along the Fergusson River.
Lower Daly River:
Prolonged major flooding is continuing along the Daly River with renewed rises likely.
The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is currently at 14.27 m and steady, with major flooding.
The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is expected to remain above the major flood level (14.00 m) during Sunday. Further rises are likely with forecast rain.

MAJOR FLOODING LIKELY AT BESWICK BRIDGE FROM MONDAY MORNING WITH FORECAST RAINFALL
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is forecast to bring widespread heavy to locally intense rainfall to parts of the Top End. Forecast heavy rainfall from late Sunday afternoon is likely to cause significant and rapid river level rises across the Waterhouse River catchment.
River levels at Beswick Bridge are likely to exceed the minor flood level overnight Sunday into Monday and are likely to exceed the moderate and major flood levels from Monday morning.
The situation will be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of Top End including Waterhouse and Roper River catchments. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and Severe Weather warning are also current for parts of NT.

Waterhouse River:
Rapid river rises and major flooding is likely to develop along the Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge from Monday morning.
The Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge is currently at 5.26 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge is likely to exceed the minor flood level (7.70 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. The river is likely exceed the moderate flood level (8.10 m) early Monday morning and major flood levels (8.70 m) from Monday morning.

Major flooding is likely to develop at Nitmiluk Centre from Monday morning. Major flooding is likely to develop at Katherine Bridge from Monday afternoon.
This situation will be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.

Katherine River Gorge Road:
Major flooding is likely along the Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is currently at 2.46 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is likely to exceed the minor flood level (3.00 m) Sunday evening. The river is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (5.50 m) early Monday morning and major (6.50 m) flood level during Monday morning.

Katherine Town:
Major flooding is likely along the Katherine River at Katherine Town.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is currently at 9.83 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is likely to exceed the minor flood level (16.00 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. The river is likely to exceed the moderate (16.5 m) flood level from Monday morning and major (17.5 m) flood level from Monday afternoon.

Headline:
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle has crossed the eastern Top End coast and weakened below tropical cyclone strength.

Areas Affected:
Warning zone: King George River Mouth to WA/NT Border.

Watch zone: None.

Cancelled zone: Milingimbi to Nathan River, including Nhulunbuy, Galiwin'ku, Numbulwar, Alyangula, Gapuwiyak, Bulman, and Ngukurr.

Details of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle 34U at 9:30 am ACST:
Intensity: Tropical Low, sustained winds near the centre of 75 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 100 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 45 kilometres of 14.0 degrees South 134.3 degrees East, estimated to be 230 kilometres west of Alyangula and 225 kilometres east northeast of Katherine.
Movement: west southwest at 33 kilometres per hour.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle has weakened below tropical cyclone strength south of Bulman. The system will weaken further over the coming hours and track across the Top End on Sunday and early Monday as a tropical low. A Severe Weather Warning is current for heavy, locally intense rainfall and damaging winds.
During Monday, Narelle is expected to move over the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf and gales are forecast to redevelop to the north of the centre. There is a Low chance that Narelle redevelops into a tropical cyclone while in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf near the NT/WA Border.

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle has weakened below tropical cyclone strength and the latest Severe Weather Warning should be referred to as GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS and HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL remains possible over parts of the Top End.
Western Australia:
GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 90 km/h are possible between King George River Mouth and the WA/NT border during Monday.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible for the north Kimberley during Monday.
