Slow moving thunderstorms with risk of heavy falls in the area.
Weather Situation
Very moist and unstable environment and a low pressure trough is generating thunderstorm activity across the Top End.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Arnhem and Carpentaria
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Katherine and Mataranka.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* slow down and turn your headlights on
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* for emergency help in floods, storms and cyclones, contact the NTES on 132 500. For more safety tips visit www.securent.nt.gov.au
The next warning is due to be issued by 11:20 pm Monday.

Moderate Flood Warning For The Katherine River

MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRING AT KATHERINE BRIDGE AND POSSIBLE AT NITMILUK EARLY TUESDAY MORNING WITH RENEWED RISES
River levels along the Katherine River are continuing to slowly fall though further rainfall is forecast for the next few days, which may cause renewed river level rises. With renewed rises, Nitmiluk Centre may reach around the moderate flood level early Tuesday morning. At Katherine Bridge, river levels are falling slowly, and likely to remain above the moderate flood level overnight Monday into Tuesday, and renewed rises are possible.
Widespread heavy falls are unlikely, but isolated heavier falls remain possible for the next few days. The situation is being closely monitored and the warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End.
Katherine River Gorge Road:
Moderate flooding is possible at Katherine River Gorge Road.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is currently at 4.21 m and falling, with minor flooding.
With forecast rain, the Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre may reach around the moderate flood level (5.50 m) early Tuesday morning. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.
Katherine Town:
Moderate flooding is occurring at Katherine Town.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is currently at 16.65 m and falling, with moderate flooding.
With forecast rain, the Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is likely to remain above the moderate flood level (16.50 m) overnight Monday into Tuesday. Renewed rises are possible with forecast rain.

Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

Major Flood Warning For The Daly River

SIGNIFICANT AND PROLONGED MAJOR FLOODING AT DALY RIVER POLICE STATION
Major flooding is occurring along the Daly River at Daly River Police Station, where the river level is likely to exceed 15.30 m overnight Tuesday into Wednesday (above the 1957 flood levels), with further rises expected. An extended peak and significant period of major flooding can be expected through the weekend and into the following week.
The river level at Dorisvale Crossing is currently stable, however is expected to rise from Monday night as the main flood peak from the Katherine River arrives.
Further rainfall is possible over the next few days, which may exacerbate river levels. The situation is being closely monitored and the warning will be updated as required.
A Major Flood Warning is current for the Katherine River, and a Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End.
Daly River above Douglas River:
River level rises are occurring in the upper Daly River, and flooding is expected to continue for at least the next few days.
Fergusson River:
River levels are elevated along the Fergusson River and tributaries.
Lower Daly River:
Major flooding is occurring along the Daly River.
The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is currently at 14.87 m and rising, with major flooding. This is already above the February 2026 flood level.
The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is likely to exceed 15.30 m overnight Tuesday into Wednesday with major flooding, higher than the 1957 flood levels of 15.19 metres. Further rises are expected as upstream flows arrive.

Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT BESWICK BRIDGE
River levels along the Waterhouse River are continuing to slowly fall though further rainfall is expected for the next few days, which may cause renewed river level rises. With renewed rises, Beswick Bridge may reach around the minor flood level overnight Monday into Tuesday.
Widespread heavy falls are unlikely, but isolated heavier falls remain possible for the next few days. The situation is being closely monitored and the warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End.
Waterhouse River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Waterhouse River.
The Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge is currently at 7.34 m and falling, below the minor flood level.
With forecast rainfall, the Waterhouse River at Beswick Bridge may have renewed rises to around the minor flood level (7.70 m) overnight Monday into Tuesday. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.
Roper River below Elsey Creek:
River levels are elevated throughout the Roper River catchment.
