Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:30 pm Monday, 29 December 2025.

Heavy rainfall possible this evening, persisting into tomorrow for the northeast tropical coast.

Weather Situation
Areas of converging enhanced onshore winds over the northeast tropical coast bring the risk of heavy rainfall this evening and tomorrow.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for areas between Cairns and north of Rollingstone this evening, persisting through Tuesday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 100 to 180 mm are likely, with isolated falls up to 220 mm possible.
A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if very dangerous thunderstorms with intense rainfall are detected.
A separate Severe Weather Warning is current for northwestern Queensland. Flood Watches and Flood Warnings are current for Northern Queensland. Please refer to https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts for more information.
Locations which may be affected include Cairns, Palm Island, Ingham, Yarrabah, Cardwell and Tully.
290 MM OF RAINFALL WAS RECORDED AT COWLEY BEACH IN THE 6 HOURS TO 6:02 PM.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 am AEST Tuesday.

Minor Flood Warning For The Mulgrave River And Flood Warning For The Russell River

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT PEETS BRIDGE AND GORDONVALE FROM TUESDAY MORNING
Moderate rainfall has been observed across the Mulgrave and Russell River catchments with the heaviest totals in the mid to lower catchment. Some river level rises are occurring and with the forecast rainfall, further rises are expected and areas of minor flooding may develop from Tuesday morning.
Further heavy rainfall is forecast to redevelop tonight and persist through to Tuesday morning.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the North Tropical Coast and a Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is current for the Mulgrave and Russell Rivers.

Mulgrave River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Mulgrave River.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge is currently at 2.34 m AHD and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge may reach around the minor flood level (5.00 m AHD) Tuesday morning with forecast rainfall. Further rises are possible.

The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale is currently at 7.80 m and steady, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale may reach around the minor flood level (12.00 m) Tuesday morning with forecast rainfall. Further rises are possible.

Russell River:
River levels are elevated and flooding may develop along the Russell River.

Flood Safety Advice:
Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT EURAMO FROM MONDAY EVENING
Moderate to heavy rainfall observed across the Tully River catchment has led to river level rises throughout the catchment. Further rainfall is forecast over the next few days.
Minor flooding is possible at Euramo from Monday evening. Further river level rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
A Flood Watch and Severe Weather Warning are current.

Tully River:
Minor flooding is possible along the Tully River
The Tully River at Euramo is currently at 5.20 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Tully River at Euramo may reach around the minor flood level (6.00 m) Monday evening. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
