Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Isolated heavy falls over Northeast Queensland this evening, becoming heavier and more widespread over the weekend.

Weather Situation
a tropical low offshore of Innisfail is bringing bands of showers and rain onto the coast on its southern flank today, with this rainfall forecast to increase significantly over the weekend as the system stalls along the coast. Significant rainfall accumulations are expected over the weekend due to the slow-moving nature of the system,
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING may develop throughout the warning area this evening in localised areas, with 6 hour rainfall totals possibly reaching 180mm and hourly rainfall totals possibly reaching 80-90mm (most likely with isolated thunderstorm activity).
The risk of HEAVY RAINFALL will increase over the weekend, mostly likely between Innisfail and about Townsville although there is some uncertainty as to exactly where the heaviest rainfall will occur. 6 hour rainfall totals of 100-180mm are likely, with isolated 6 hour totals up to 220mm. 24 hour rainfall totals of 200-300mm are also likely, with isolated falls of up to 500mm.
The potential for heavy rainfall may continue into early next week.

Locations which may be affected include Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Innisfail, Ayr, Home Hill, Cardwell, Giru, Clare and Lucinda.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEST Friday.
Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and emergency services would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Minor Flood Warning For The Mulgrave River And Flood Warning For The Russell River

MINOR FLOODING EASING AT GORDONVALE
FLOODING IS OCCURRING ALONG THE RUSSELL RIVER
Over the last few days, rainfall totals up to 940 mm have been recorded in the Mulgrave-Russell catchment which has caused river level rises and flooding.
Further significant rainfall is forecast from Saturday which may cause renewed or further flooding depending on the location of the heaviest falls. The situation is being closely monitored and warnings will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the North Tropical Coast.

Mulgrave River:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Mulgrave River.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge is currently at 4.65 metres and falling, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge is likely to remain below the minor flood level (5.00 m) during Thursday.

The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale is currently at 12.25 metres and falling, above the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale may fall below the minor flood level (12.00 m) early Thursday afternoon.

Russell River:
River levels are elevated and minor flooding is occurring along the Russell River at Bucklands and Clyde Rd.

Minor Flood Warning For The Tully River

MINOR FLOODING OCCURRING AT EURAMO
Moderate to heavy rainfall since 9:00 am Monday has resulted in river level rises across the Tully River catchment. The Tully River at Euramo is currently steady near a peak, and is likely to remain above the minor flood level into Friday.
Further heavy rainfall is forecast from Friday onwards, which may cause renewed or further flooding depending on the location of the heaviest falls. This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as necessary.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the North Tropical Coast.

Tully River:
Minor flooding is occurring along the Tully River.
The Tully River at Euramo is currently steady near a peak of 7.50 metres, above the minor flood level (6.00 m).
The Tully River at Euramo is likely to remain above the minor flood level (6.00 m) overnight Thursday into Friday.

Flooding in North Queensland catchments during December 2023 damaged high priority river gauges that support the Bureau of Meteorology to provide high accuracy flood forecasts. While river gauges are being repaired, the Bureau will continue to issue flood watches and warnings for these catchments using the best available data.
