Major Flood Warning For The Daintree And Mossman Rivers

MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT DAINTREE VILLAGE EARLY FRIDAY MORNING
ELEVATED RIVER LEVELS OCCURRING ALONG THE BLOOMFIELD RIVER
Heavy rainfall since Thursday afternoon has caused rapid river level rises across the Daintree and Bloomfield River catchments. Major flooding is possible at Daintree Village early Friday morning. Elevated river levels are occurring along the Bloomfield River at China Camp. River level rises are also being observed along the Mossman River at Mossman.
Further rainfall is forecast across the Daintree and Mossman catchments during Friday, which may lead to further river level rises. This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy, locally intense rainfall is current for parts of the Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands Forecast Districts. A Flood Watch is current for North Tropical Coast and parts of Cape York Peninsula, Central Coast, Capricornia and Carpentaria catchments.

Daintree River:
Major flooding is possible along the Daintree River. Major flooding is occurring at Bairds. Elevated river levels are occurring along the Bloomfield River at China Camp.
The Daintree River at Daintree Village is currently at 8.75 m and rising, with moderate flooding.
The Daintree River at Daintree Village may reach around the major flood level (9.00 m) early Friday morning. Further rises are possible with forecast rainfall.

Mossman River:
Elevated river levels are occurring along the Mossman River.

Flood Safety Advice:
Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL NORTH OF INNISFAIL.

Weather Situation
Tropical Low 29U is offshore of Port Douglas, with heavy showers and thunderstorms extending along the monsoon trough through the Daintree and along the northeast coast to Innisfail. The low is expected to move onshore late Friday morning near Cardwell, but the heaviest rainfall is forecast to be further north of the system centre.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL for the following areas:
Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast on the North Tropical Coast north of Innisfail. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 and 160 mm are likely, and 24-hourly rainfall totals of 350 mm are possible. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is possible tonight through to Friday morning, with six-hourly totals up to 240 mm.
Rainfall is expected to extend inland later on Friday as the low moves onshore. The location of any areas of heavy rain beyond Friday remains highly uncertain.

236 MM WAS RECORDED AT YANDILL IN THE 6 HOURS TO 7:33 pm
178 mm was recorded at China Camp in the 6 hours to 7:46 pm
154 mm was recorded at Upper Spencer Creek in the 6 hours to 7:28 pm
151 mm was recorded at Mulligan Highway (McLeod River) in the 6 hours to 8:00 pm
129 mm was recorded at Lakeland Downs in the 6 hours to 8:21 pm

Emergency services advise people to:
* If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust.
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

MINOR FLOODING LIKELY AT PEETS BRIDGE LATE THURSDAY NIGHT AND POSSIBLE AT GORDONVALE EARLY FRIDAY MORNING
Moderate to heavy rainfall recorded since Thursday afternoon has resulted in river level rises across the Mulgrave and Russell catchments. Minor flooding is likely at Peets Bridge late Thursday night and possible at Gordonvale early Friday morning.
Further showers and storms are forecast over the next few days, which may lead to further river level rises and flooding across the catchment. This warning will be updated as required.
A Severe Weather Warning for heavy, locally intense rainfall is current for parts of the Peninsula and North Tropical Coast and Tablelands Forecast Districts. A Flood Watch is current for North Tropical Coast and parts of Cape York Peninsula, Central Coast, Capricornia and Carpentaria catchments.

Mulgrave River:
Minor flooding is likely along the Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge and possible at Gordonvale. Minor flooding is occurring at The Fisheries.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge is currently at 3.14 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Peets Bridge is likely to exceed the minor flood level (5.00 m) late Thursday night. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.

The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale is currently at 8.70 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Mulgrave River at Gordonvale may exceed the minor flood level (12.00 m) early Friday morning. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.
