Initial Major Flood Warning For The Bohle River, Minor Flood Warning For The Ross River And Flood Warning For The Black River

MAJOR FLOODING LIKELY AT MT BOHLE FRIDAY EVENING
MINOR FLOODING LIKELY AT APLIN WEIR OVERNIGHT FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY
Heavy rainfall totals have been observed since 9:00 am Friday which have resulted in river level rises in the Ross, Bohle and Black Rivers. River and creek level rises have been observed in parts of the catchment, with major flooding likely at Mt Bohle Friday evening.
Heavy rainfall is forecast over the next few days, which may cause further river and creek level rises. The situation is being closely monitored and warnings will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for coastal and adjacent inland catchments south of Cairns to Mackay. A Severe Weather Warning is also current for parts of the North Tropical Coast, Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin.

Ross River:
Minor flooding is likely along the Ross River.
The Ross River at Aplin Weir is currently at 0.81 metres and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Ross River at Aplin Weir is likely to reach the minor flood level (1.10 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. Further rises are expected with forecast rainfall across the next few days.

Bohle River:
Major flooding is likely along the Bohle River.
The Bohle River at Mt Bohle is currently at 4.81 metres and rising, with minor flooding.
The Bohle River at Mt Bohle is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (5.50 m) late Friday afternoon. The river level is likely to reach the major flood level (7.00 m) Friday evening. Further rises are expected with forecast rainfall across the next few days.

Black River and Bluewater Creek:
River level rises are occurring along the Black River. Further rises are likely with forecast rainfall.

Initial Moderate Flood Warning For The Haughton River Catchment

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT GIRU SATURDAY MORNING
Moderate to heavy rainfall totals have been observed across the Haughton River catchment since Monday. Heavy rainfall is forecast across the catchment for the remainder of Friday and into the weekend.
Minor flooding is likely at Giru from overnight Friday and moderate flooding is possible from Saturday morning with forecast rainfall.
The situation is being closely monitored and warnings will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for coastal and adjacent inland catchments south of Cairns to Mackay. A Severe Weather Warning is current for parts of the North Tropical Coast, Tablelands, Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Haughton River:
Moderate flooding may occur along the Haughton River.
The Haughton River at Giru is currently at 0.58 metres and steady, below the minor flood level (1.80 m).
The Haughton River at Giru is likely to exceed the minor flood level (1.80 m) overnight Friday into Saturday. The river level may reach the moderate flood level (2.10 m) Saturday morning. Further river level rises are possible with forecast rainfall during the next few days.

Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin Forecast Districts.

Isolated heavy falls over Northeast Queensland from this afternoon, becoming heavier and more widespread over the weekend.

Weather Situation
a low offshore of the Northern Queensland Coast is bringing bands of showers and rain onto the coast on its southern flank today, with this rainfall forecast to increase significantly over the weekend as the system stalls along the coast. Very significant rainfall accumulations are expected over the weekend due to the slow-moving nature of the system.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
North Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Herbert and Lower Burdekin
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible throughout the warning area from this afternoon in localised areas, with 6 hour rainfall totals possibly reaching 180mm and hourly rainfall totals possibly reaching 80-90mm (most likely with isolated thunderstorm activity).
The risk of HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING will increase over the weekend, mostly likely between Innisfail and Ayr, although there is some uncertainty as to exactly where the heaviest rainfall will occur. 6 hour rainfall totals of 100-180mm are likely, with isolated 6 hour totals up to 220mm. 24 hour rainfall totals of 200-300mm are also likely, with isolated falls of up to 500mm.
There is also the risk of very localised intense rainfall over the weekend, which could bring even higher isolated rainfall totals. A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if necessary.
The potential for heavy rainfall may continue into early next week.

Locations which may be affected include Townsville, Palm Island, Ingham, Innisfail, Ayr, Home Hill, Cardwell, Tully, Giru, Clare and Lucinda.

Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Friday.
