TROPICAL CYCLONE KOJI HAS FORMED AND IS APPROACHING THE NORTHEAST TROPICAL COAST, BRINGING HEAVY TO LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING TO LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS FROM LATER TODAY, CONTINUING OVER THE WEEKEND.

Weather Situation
Tropical Cyclone Koji (12U) is currently a Category 2 tropical cyclone and will continue to move south towards the northeast Queensland coast. Koji is forecast to cross the coast as a Category 2 tropical cyclone on Sunday morning south of Townsville.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING, LOCALLY DESTRUCTIVE WINDS for the following areas:
North Tropical Coast and Tablelands, Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields and Capricornia
For COASTAL AREAS: East to southeasterly DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with wind gusts around 100 km/h are expected about exposed coastal parts between Innisfail and Mackay this afternoon and early evening. Damaging winds will turn east to northeasterly south of 12U later this evening and overnight.
For EXPOSED COASTAL AREAS from south of Townsville to Proserpine: DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS up to 130 km/h are possible from late tonight and early Sunday morning.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop along coastal parts of the southern Cassowary Coast and Townsville coast later today, and extend south into the Central Coast and Whitsundays and the northern Capricornia overnight into Sunday. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 90 to 160 mm are likely. 24-hourly totals between 150 to 250 mm are likely, with isolated falls in excess of 350 mm possible. Further inland, HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to develop from late tonight into Sunday morning, with six-hourly rainfall totals between 70 and 150 mm possible.
Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is possible about coastal areas between Ingham and Proserpine from Saturday evening before extending to Mackay from Sunday morning, with isolated six-hourly falls in excess of 230 mm possible.
Conditions could begin to ease about the North Tropical Coast early Sunday morning, but persist into Sunday over parts of the Herbert and Lower Burdekin and Central Coast and Whitsundays.

A separate Severe Weather Warning associated with monsoonal winds is current for people in the Peninsula. Flood Watch and Warning products are also current for large parts of Queensland, including the northeast. A Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if intense rainfall is detected.
Underlying wet soils will make trees easier to fall about the northeast tropical coast. Landslips could also occur about steep and hilly terrain.

Locations which may be affected include Innisfail, Palm Island, Cardwell, Ingham, Townsville, Charters Towers, Ayr, Bowen, Airlie Beach, the Whitsunday Islands, Proserpine, Mackay, Moranbah, Sarina, Carmila, and St Lawrence.
Sustained winds of around 74 km/h were recorded at Hamilton Island at 5:30 pm.

Emergency services advise people to:
* If you have children make sure they are with you or an adult you trust.
* Pack away, secure or tie down outdoor furniture, toys and trampolines if it s safe to do so.
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

Tropical Cyclone Koji has developed, and is moving towards the northeast Queensland coast.

Areas Affected:
Warning zone: Innisfail to Mackay, including Townsville, Palm Island, Bowen, Proserpine and Whitsunday Islands.

Watch zone: None.

Cancelled zone: None.

Details of Tropical Cyclone Koji 12U at 4:00 pm AEST:
Intensity: Category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 95 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 130 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 45 kilometres of 17.1 degrees South 148.1 degrees East, estimated to be 275 kilometres north northeast of Townsville and 225 kilometres east northeast of Innisfail.
Movement: south at 13 kilometres per hour.
Tropical Cyclone Koji (12U) is located in the Coral Sea offshore of the North Tropical Coast and is moving south towards the Queensland coast.
Koji, a category 2 system, is forecast to continue on a similar south track until crossing the coast. The coastal crossing is forecast for early Sunday morning between Townsville and Bowen. After crossing, Koji will weaken and then track generally westwards.

Hazards:
DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS to 130 km/h are possible from this evening and into early Sunday morning about exposed coastal locations from south of Townsville to Proserpine.
GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 100 km/h are expected to develop over coastal areas between Cardwell and Airlie Beach, this afternoon or evening. GALES may extend north, to areas between Innisfail and Cardwell this evening if Koji takes a track further west. GALES may extend south, to areas between Proserpine and Mackay, and adjacent inland areas overnight and early Sunday morning.
Gales are expected to ease as the system crosses the coast and moves inland during Sunday.
HEAVY RAINFALL, which may lead to FLASH FLOODING, is forecast to develop from Ingham to Proserpine tonight. Locally INTENSE RAINFALL, which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING, is possible between Townsville and Proserpine later tonight, extending south to Mackay on Sunday.
Tides are likely to be higher than normal between Cardwell and Mackay over the weekend but should not exceed the highest tide of the year.
A Severe Weather Warning is also current for heavy to locally intense rainfall and damaging winds about the northeast and central Queensland coasts. Flood Watches and Warnings are also current.

Recommended Action:
People between Ayr to Proserpine, including Bowen and Airlie Beach should complete preparations now and be prepared to shelter in a safe place.
- Boats and outside property should be secured before nightfall if safe to do so.
People between Innisfail and Mackay, including Innisfail, Townsville, Palm Island should take precautions and listen to the next advice at 8 pm.

MINOR FLOODING LIKELY ALONG THE HERBERT RIVER OVERNIGHT SATURDAY WITH FURTHER RISES TO MAJOR POSSIBLE FROM SUNDAY MORNING WITH FORECAST RAINFALL
Heavy to locally intense rainfall is forecast to develop across the Herbert River catchment during Saturday evening and into Sunday. The timing and location of the heaviest falls will depend on the development and track of the tropical low. This rainfall is likely to result in rapid river and creek level rises across the catchment.
Major flooding is possible across the Lower Herbert River at Ingham Pump Station, Gairloch and Halifax from Sunday morning, with forecast rainfall. Moderate flooding is possible at Abergowrie Bridge from overnight Saturday, with forecast rainfall.
This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for adjoining catchments. A Severe Weather Warning for heavy to locally intense rainfall is current for the Herbert River catchment. A Tropical Cyclone Advice is current across the catchment.

Herbert River to Nash's Crossing:
Renewed minor flooding is likely along the Herbert River at Gleneagle.
No observations are currently available for the Herbert River at Gleneagle Homestead. Based on the nearby automatic gauge, river levels are estimated to be below the minor flood level (4.50 m) and rising.
The Herbert River at Gleneagle Homestead is likely to exceed the minor flood level (4.50 m) overnight Saturday into Sunday.

Herbert River downstream of Nash's Crossing:
Major flooding is possible at Ingham Pump Station, Gairloch and Halifax from Sunday morning.
The Herbert River at Abergowrie Bridge is currently at 3.52 m and rising, below the minor flood level.

A monsoon low has resulted in rainfall and river level rises across the Tully River catchment over the past few days, with a below minor peak observed at Euramo Friday afternoon. Further heavy rainfall is forecast to develop during the remainder of Saturday and into Sunday. The timing and the location of the heaviest falls will depend on the development and track of the tropical low.
This rainfall is expected to result in further river level rises across the catchment. With forecast rainfall, minor flooding is likely at Euramo overnight Saturday into Sunday, and moderate flooding is possible from early Sunday morning.
