A trough is interacting with a moist, unstable airmass and is causing severe thunderstorms in central Queensland.
Warnings for Thursday 15 January
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Central Highlands and Coalfields
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Clermont, Capella and Bogantungan.
Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West, Central Coast and Whitsundays and Central West districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
Cancellation for the following areas:
Central Coast and Whitsundays,Central West,North West,Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders
Emergency services advise people to:
* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
The next warning is due to be issued by 2:15 am.

MINOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT WINTON FROM FRIDAY MORNING
FLOODING CONTINUES AT DIAMANTINA LAKES
Recent heavy rainfall has caused river level rises and flooding across the Diamantina River catchment and its upper tributaries.
In the last 24 hours, moderate rainfall has been recorded in the Western River catchment, which may result in minor flooding at Winton from Friday morning. Further downstream, moderate flooding is occurring at Diamantina Lakes, where a major flood peak was observed during Sunday morning. This peak is continuing to move downstream along the Diamantina River.
Further rainfall is forecast across parts of the Diamantina River catchment for the remainder of the week as Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji moves across northwest Queensland. This rainfall may result in further river and creek level rises. This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes:
The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is at 5.43 m and easing slowly, above the level of the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway (2.10 m).
Western River:
Minor flooding may occur along the Western River.
There are no current observations for the Western River at Winton.
The Western River at Winton may exceed the minor flood level (1.50 m) Friday morning.
Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes:
River level rises are occurring along the lower Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes.
Flood Safety Advice:
Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.

MAJOR FLOODING OCCURRING MARION DOWNS
MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT BEDOURIE FROM EARLY NEXT WEEK
A moderate flood peak along the Georgina River has passed Glenormiston and is now approaching Marion Downs, where major flooding is estimated to be occurring. As this peak travels downstream, moderate flooding may develop along the Eyre Creek at Bedourie from early next week.
Further downstream at Glengyle, minor flooding is expected to continue into early next week, with further rises possible as upstream flows arrive.
Further rainfall is forecast for the next few days, with the remnants of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji forecast to move into northwest Queensland. This is likely to result in further river level rises in the upper Georgina and Eyre Creek catchments over the coming days. This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for the Gulf Country and parts of Western Queensland and the Cape York Peninsula, which includes the Georgina River and Eyre Creek.
Georgina River to Marion Downs:
Major flooding is estimated to be occurring along the Georgina River at Marion Downs.
The Georgina River at Marion Downs was at 4.95 m and rising at 07:00 am Thursday morning, with moderate flooding. The river level is currently estimated to be above the major flood level (5.00 m).
The Georgina River at Marion Downs is likely to remain above the major flood level (5.00 m) though to the weekend.
Georgina River downstream of Marion Downs:
Elevated river levels are expected to be occurring along the Georgina River downstream of Marion Downs, with further rises expected during this week.
Eyre Creek:
Moderate flooding is possible along Eyre Creek.
The Eyre Creek at Bedourie is currently at 3.75 m and steady, with minor flooding.
The Eyre Creek at Bedourie may exceed the moderate flood level (4.00 m) early next week.
As at Wednesday 09:00 am AEST, Eyre Creek at Glengyle was at 2.60 m and rising slowly, with minor flooding.
Eyre Creek at Glengyle is expected to remain above the minor flood level (2.00 m) through to early next week. Further rises are possible as upstream flows arrive.

MAJOR FLOODING ESTIMATED TO BE FALLING SLOWLY AT WALKERS BEND
MINOR FLOODING EASING AT CLONCURRY AND POSSIBLE AT RICHMOND FROM THURSDAY EVENING
Inflows from multiple tributaries are causing major flooding at Walkers Bend, where the river level is estimated to be falling slowly.
Along the Flinders River at Richmond, minor flooding is possible from Thursday evening. Along the Cloncurry River at Cloncurry, minor flooding is likely to ease during Thursday afternoon.
Further rainfall is forecast for the next few days, with the remnants of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji forecast to move into northwest Queensland. This is likely to result in further river level rises in the upper Flinders and Cloncurry catchments over the coming days.
This situation is being closely monitored, and warnings will be updated as required.

Flinders River to Richmond:
Minor flooding is possible at Richmond.

The Flinders River at Richmond Post Office may reach around the minor flood level (5.00 m) Thursday evening. Further river level rises are possible with forecast rainfall.
Flinders River downstream of Richmond:
Major flooding is estimated to be occurring along the Flinders River downstream of Richmond.
River level observations are unavailable for the Flinders River at Walkers Bend. The river level is estimated to be well above the major flood level (8.00 m) and falling slowly.
The Flinders River at Walkers Bend is expected to remain above the major flood level until at least the end of the week.
Cloncurry River:
Minor flooding easing at Cloncurry.
The Cloncurry River at Cloncurry is currently at 3.02 m and falling, with minor flooding.
The Cloncurry River at Cloncurry is likely to fall below the minor flood level (3.00 m) during Thursday afternoon. Further river level rises are likely with forecast rainfall.
