Flood Watch For The Part Of The Kimberley And The Pilbara Districts
Issued at 12:45 PM WST on Friday 17 January 2025
Flood Watch Number: 2
FLOODING POSSIBLE IN THE COASTAL PARTS OF THE KIMBERLEY AND THE PILBARA FROM FRIDAY
A broad low pressure trough lies over the Kimberley, extending offshore to a weak low north of the Pilbara, producing heavy rainfall over the coastal areas of the Flood Watch area.
Catchments in the generalised Flood Watch area are wetting up in the Kimberley and expected to wet up in the coming days across the coastal area in the Pilbara, leading to river level rises in streams and creeks.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop over the Kimberley on Friday, with the rainfall focus shifting to the coast from this weekend. Rainfall totals along the Kimberley coastal fringe of 40-80 mm with isolated 130 mm possible, with less rainfall totals expected to reach further inland parts of the region. The rainfall focus is likely to ease about the Kimberley on Sunday, with the rainfall shifting to the Pilbara. Rainfall totals along the Pilbara coastal fringe of 40-80 mm with isolated 140 mm possible, with less rainfall totals expected to reach further inland parts of the region.
Minor flooding is possible with forecast rainfall. Flooding may affect road conditions, likely impacting travel and movement across the West Kimberley and the Pilbara coastal areas during the weekend and into next week.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
West Kimberley Rivers
De Grey River
Pilbara Coastal Rivers
Fortescue River
Onslow Coast
