Major Flood Warning For The Katherine River

KATHERINE BRIDGE LIKELY TO REMAIN ABOVE MAJOR THROUGH SUNDAY AND INTO MONDAY
NITMILUK CENTRE MAY REMAIN AROUND MODERATE INTO MONDAY
River levels along the Katherine River are continuing to fall. At Nitmiluk Centre, with renewed rises, the river level may remain around moderate flood level into Monday. At Katherine Bridge, river levels are falling slowly, with a prolonged recession expected given the magnitude of the peak, and are likely to remain above the major flood level through Sunday and into Monday
Further rainfall is expected for the next few days, which may cause renewed river level rises. Widespread heavy falls are unlikely, but isolated heavier falls remain possible. The situation is being closely monitored and the warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End.
Katherine River Gorge Road:
Moderate flooding is occurring at Katherine River Gorge Road.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is currently at 5.52 m and falling, with moderate flooding.
With forecast rainfall, the Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre may remain around the moderate flood level (5.50 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. Further rises are possible with forecast rain.
Katherine Town:
Major flooding is occurring at Katherine Town.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge peaked at 19.20 m around 10:45 pm Saturday 7 March, with major flooding. The river is currently at 18.69 m and steady, with major flooding.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is likely to remain above the major flood level (17.50 m) through Sunday into Monday. Further renewed rises are possible with forecast rain.

Don't drive, walk, swim or play in floodwater because it is dangerous.
Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways.
Obey road closure signs. Plan ahead so you don't drive on flooded roads.
