Headline:
Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina, Category 3, is slowly passing to the northwest of Darwin.

Areas Affected:
Warning zone: The central and western Tiwi Islands and Cape Hotham to Wadeye. This includes Darwin, Pirlangimpi, Milikapiti, Wurrumiyanga and Wadeye.

Watch zone: Wadeye (NT) to Troughton Island (WA) including Kalumburu (WA).

Cancelled zone: None.

Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina 02U at 1:30 am ACST [12:00 am AWST]:
Intensity: Category 3, sustained winds near the centre of 130 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 185 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 20 kilometres of 12.2 degrees South 130.3 degrees East, estimated to be 65 kilometres west northwest of Darwin and 60 kilometres south southwest of Wurrumiyanga.
Movement: west southwest at 8 kilometres per hour.
Darwin radar and satellite imagery shows Fina to the northwest of Darwin as a small but intense system. Based on Fina's forecast west southwest track, the very destructive core is passing to the northwest of Darwin.
Fina is forecast to remain a severe tropical cyclone during Sunday and into Monday as it moves through the southern Timor Sea, and then start weakening during Monday or Tuesday near the Kimberley coast.

Hazards:
VERY DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS to 185 km/h may be occurring along the south coast of Bathurst Island and about exposed coastal sites around Darwin and the Cox Peninsula including Wagait Beach and Belyen, but are less likely at Darwin. DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS to 155 km/h are likely to continue over southern parts of the Tiwi islands, including Wurrumiyanga. Destructive gusts may occur about the Cox Peninsula over the next few hours and possibly further to Dundee Beach during Sunday morning, particularly if Fina moves in a more southerly direction. GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 120 km/h are occurring over the Tiwi Islands and from Darwin northeast to Cape Hotham and southwest to Dundee Beach. Gales may extend to Daly River Mouth during Sunday morning, and if Fina takes a more southerly track, gales could extend south to Wadeye during Sunday. Later Sunday or on Monday, GALES may extend to coastal parts of the north Kimberley in WA, from Kalumburu to the WA/NT Border, but not including Wyndham or Kununurra. HEAVY to LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL, which may lead to FLASH FLOODING, is currently occurring around Darwin, and will be possible over the Tiwi Islands and elsewhere about the mainland coast between Cape Hotham and Dundee Beach, during the overnight period. The risk of HEAVY RAINFALL about coastal and adjacent inland areas will extend southwest to the Daly River Mouth during Sunday. Also refer to the adjacent Severe Weather Warning. Coastal residents on the Tiwi Islands, and between Cape Hotham and Warruwi are specifically warned that tides are likely to rise above the normal high tide mark with LARGE WAVES and MINOR FLOODING of low-lying coastal areas.

Recommended Action:
NTES advises people in the path of the dangerous cyclone about southern Bathurst Island and very exposed coastal locations around Darwin and the Cox Peninsula, should stay calm and remain in a secure shelter while the destructive winds continue. Do not venture outside if you find yourself in the eye of the cyclone - destructive winds from a different direction could resume at any time. Heed the advice and follow the instructions of Emergency Services personnel and local authorities. NTES advises people about the central and western Tiwi Islands, and elsewhere between Daly River Mouth to Cape Hotham, including Darwin, should complete preparations quickly and be prepared to shelter in a safe place. Outside property, including boats, playground equipment, chairs and tables should be secured. NTES advises people between Daly River Mouth and Wadeye should immediately commence or continue preparations, especially securing boats and property, using available daylight hours. NTES advises people elsewhere near and between Wadeye and the NT/WA Border should consider what action they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases. for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for parts of Daly and Tiwi districts.

HEAVY TO LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE IN A RAINBAND TO THE EAST OF SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE FINA.

Weather Situation
Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina is moving west-southwest along the southern coast of the Tiwi Islands. A band of heavy to locally intense rain is extending from Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina to the east affecting northern parts of the Daly district and eastern parts of the Tiwi Islands.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Daly and Tiwi
HEAVY to LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is likely in the warning area. Six hourly totals of 100 to 120 mm are expected, with isolated totals of 160 mm possible. 24-hourly totals of up to 300 mm are possible.
DAMAGING WINDS averaging 55 to 65 km/h with peak gusts up to 100 km/h are possible with showers and thunderstorms.
Conditions are forecast to ease from the east during Sunday as Tropical Cyclone Fina continues to track towards the west-southwest.

* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit
