Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for Tiwi and parts of Daly districts.

HEAVY TO LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING WINDS POSSIBLE IN RAINBANDS TO THE EAST OF SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE FINA.

Weather Situation
Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina is moving southwest and is currently to the southwest of the Tiwi Islands. Bands of heavy to locally intense rain are extending from Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina to the east affecting northern parts of the Daly district.
HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Daly and Tiwi
HEAVY to LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is likely in the warning area. Six hourly totals of 80 to 120 mm are likely, with isolated totals of 160 mm possible.
Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WINDS GUSTS up to 100 km/h are possible with showers and thunderstorms.
Conditions are forecast to ease from the east during Sunday as Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina continues to track towards the southwest.

360 mm OF RAINFALL WAS RECORDED AT MIDDLE POINT IN THE 12 HOURS TO 5:56 AM.
202.5 mm of rainfall was recorded at Arnhem Highway (Adelaide River) in the 12 hours to 6:18 am.
109.8 mm of rainfall was recorded at Batchelor Airport in the 6 hours to 7:31 am

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions deteriorate
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit

Headline:
Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina is continues to move away from the northwest Top End coast.

Areas Affected:
Warning zone: Wadeye to Dundee Beach in the Northern Territory and also NT/WA Border to Troughton Island, including Kalumburu in Western Australia.

Watch zone: None.

Cancelled zone: The central and western Tiwi Islands. North of Dundee Beach to Cape Hotham and also Wadeye to NT/WA Border. This includes Darwin, the Cox Peninsula, Pirlangimpi, Milikapiti and Wurrumiyanga.

Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Fina 02U at 9:30 am ACST [8:00 am AWST]:
Intensity: Category 3, sustained winds near the centre of 150 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 205 kilometres per hour.
Location: within 20 kilometres of 12.6 degrees South 129.7 degrees East, estimated to be 75 kilometres west northwest of Dundee Beach and 130 kilometres west of Darwin.
Movement: west southwest at 8 kilometres per hour.
Fina remains as a small but intense category 3 cyclone. It is slowly moving southwest, away from Darwin. The very destructive core of the cyclone is now located well off the northwest Top End coast.
Fina is forecast to remain a severe tropical cyclone during Sunday as it moves southwest, through the southern Timor Sea. It will start weakening during Monday as it nears the north of the Kimberley coast.

Hazards:
GALES with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to 120 km/h are likely about the coastal areas between Dundee Beach to Daly River Mouth. Gales may further extend from Daly River Mouth to Wadeye later today, only if Fina takes a more southerly track. Please refer to https://www.bom.gov.au/weather-and-climate/warnings-and-alerts Gales have eased over the central and western Tiwi Islands and from north of Dundee Beach to Cape Hotham, this includes Darwin, the Cox Peninsula, Pirlangimpi, Milikapiti and Wurrumiyanga. However, a severe weather warning remains for damaging wind gusts with showers and thunderstorms over this area. GALES may possibly extend to coastal parts of the north Kimberley in WA from Monday morning, from Troughton Island to the WA/NT Border, including Kalumburu, as Fina moves through the Timor Sea and begins to weaken. Gales are not expected to extend to Wyndham or Kununurra. DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS to 155 km/h are may develop over exposed coastal area of the northern Kimberley coast during Monday if the system takes a track further south. Destructive wind gusts are no longer expected over the Northern Territory coast. HEAVY to LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL, which may lead to FLASH FLOODING, about the coastal areas between Dundee Beach to the Daly River Mouth, possibly extending south to Wadeye later on Sunday, then extending southwest to the north Kimberley coast later on Monday. Also refer to the adjacent Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall over the northwest Top End. Coastal residents on the Tiwi Islands, and between Cape Hotham and Warruwi in the Northern Territory are specifically warned that tides may continue to rise above the normal high tide mark on Sunday with LARGE WAVES and MINOR FLOODING of low-lying coastal areas. Coastal residents over the north Kimberley coast in Western Australia between Troughton Island and the NT/WA Border may experience tides higher than normal on high tide on Monday night.

Recommended Action:
NTES advises people from Dundee Beach to Daly River Mouth should remain sheltered in a safe place. Outside property, including boats, playground equipment, chairs and tables should be secured. NTES advises people between Daly River Mouth and Wadeye should immediately commence or continue preparations, especially securing boats and property, using available daylight hours.
