Severe Weather Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West and Central West Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:37 am Wednesday, 31 December 2025.

Heavy rainfall remains possible in northwest Queensland, extending south into parts of the Central West during today.

Weather Situation
A broad slow-moving low pressure system is situated near Cloncurry in the northwest of the state and is expected to remain in place over the coming days. Widespread moderate rainfall is forecast across inland parts to the southeast of the low, with periods of locally heavy rainfall possible. Heavy rainfall may ease for a period this morning and early afternoon, but a renewed risk of isolated heavy rainfall redevelops across southern parts of the warning area in the Central West district later today.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West and Central West
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to continue today and possibly into Thursday for parts of the Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, North West and Central West forecast districts. Widespread six-hourly rainfall totals between 40 to 70 mm are likely, with isolated heavy falls of 100 mm possible.
These conditions also present a risk to cattle and other livestock.

Locations which may be affected include Winton, Evesham Station, Stamford, Aramac, Muttaburra, Selwyn, Mckinlay and Corfield.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Gulf Country district and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.

* Park your car undercover away from trees.
* Close doors and windows.
* Keep asthma medications close by. Storms and wind can trigger asthma attacks.
* Charge mobile phones and power banks in case the power goes out.
* Put your pets somewhere safe and make sure they can be identified in case they get lost.
* Do not drive now unless you have to because conditions are dangerous.
* Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area.
* Go inside a strong building now. Stay inside until the storm has passed.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEST Wednesday.

Major Flood Warning For The Flinders River And Moderate Flood Warning For The Cloncurry River

MAJOR FLOODING CONTINUES TO RISE SLOWLY AT WALKERS BEND
MODERATE FLOODING OCCURRING AT RICHMOND POST OFFICE AND CLONCURRY, WITH FURTHER RISES LIKELY
Recent significant rainfall has caused river and creek level rises and flooding across the Flinders and Cloncurry River catchments. Areas of moderate to heavy rainfall are forecast to continue over the next few days, with river and creek level rises likely to continue.
Moderate flooding is occurring at Cloncurry and is expected to be occurring at Richmond. Downstream, major flooding at Walkers Bend is expected to continue rising slowly as upstream floodwaters arrive over the coming days.
The situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of North and North West Queensland.
A Severe Weather Warning is current for Heavy Rainfall for parts of North West Queensland, including parts of the Flinders catchment.

Flinders River to Richmond:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Flinders River to Richmond.
No observations are currently available for the Flinders River at Richmond Post Office. Based on the nearby automatic gauge, the river level is expected to be above the moderate flood level (6.00 m) and rising slowly.
The Flinders River at Richmond Post Office is expected to remain above the moderate flood level (6.00 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, with further rises likely.

Flinders River downstream of Richmond:
Major flooding is occurring along the Flinders River downstream of Richmond.
The Flinders River at Walkers Bend is currently at 9.13 m and steady, with major flooding.
The Flinders River at Walkers Bend is expected to remain above the major flood level (8.00 m) over the next few days, with slow rises continuing as upstream flows arrive.

Cloncurry River:
Moderate flooding is occurring along the Cloncurry River.
The Cloncurry River at Cloncurry is currently at 4.98 m and falling, with minor flooding.
The Cloncurry River at Cloncurry is likely to remain around the moderate flood level (5.00 m) overnight Tuesday into Wednesday. Renewed rises are possible with forecast rain.

MODERATE FLOODING POSSIBLE AT MARION DOWNS FROM LATE THIS WEEK
Recent rainfall has caused river level rises and flooding along the upper Georgina River and its tributaries upstream of Marion Downs.
Further moderate to heavy rainfall is possible for the next few days, which may cause renewed rises and higher river levels. The situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of North and Northwest Queensland.

Georgina River to Marion Downs:
Minor to moderate flooding is possible along the Georgina River to Marion Downs.
The Georgina River at Marion Downs is currently at 2.35 m and relatively steady, below the minor flood level (3.00 m).
The Georgina River at Marion Downs may exceed the minor flood level (3.00 m) during Wednesday 31 December. The river may reach around the moderate flood level (4.00 m) later in the week with forecast rainfall.

FLOODING OCCURRING ALONG THE NICHOLSON AND LEICHHARDT RIVERS
Recent widespread heavy rainfall has caused river and creek level rises across the Nicholson and Leichhardt catchments, with minor to major flooding occurring. River levels are likely to rise downstream along the Albert River at Burketown Airstrip over the next few days.
Further areas of widespread rainfall with locally heavy totals are forecast to continue for the next few days, which is likely to cause further river and creek level rises.
The situation is being closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of North and Northwest Queensland.

Nicholson and Gregory Rivers:
Moderate flooding is continuing along the Nicholson River at Escott Station, and the Gregory River at Gregory Downs.
No observations are currently available for the Albert River at Burketown Airstrip.
River levels along the Albert River at Burketown Airstrip are likely to rise over the next few days.

Leichhardt River:
Major flooding is rising along the Leichhardt River at Lorraine and minor flooding is rising downstream at Floraville.

RIVER LEVELS ARE ABOVE THE SPRINGVALE DIAMANTINA LAKES CAUSEWAY AT DIAMANTINA LAKES
Recent rainfall has caused river level rises and flooding across the Western and Diamantina Rivers.
Further moderate to heavy rainfall is forecast over the next few days. River levels are expected to remain elevated and further river level rises are possible.
This situation is being closely monitored, and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of North and Northwest Queensland.

Diamantina River to Diamantina Lakes:
The Diamantina River at Diamantina Lakes is at 3.51 m and steady, above the level of the Springvale Diamantina Lakes Road Causeway (2.10 m). The river level is expected to remain above the causeway into next week.
Western River:
Minor flooding is likely occurring at Winton, with the possibility of moderate flooding with forecast rainfall.
The Western River at Winton is currently at 1.40 m and relatively steady, below the minor flood level.
The Western River at Winton may reach around the minor flood level (1.50 m) during Wednesday. The river may reach around the moderate flood level (2.00 m) late this week.

Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes:
River level rises are occurring along the lower Diamantina River downstream of Diamantina Lakes, with minor flooding occurring at Monkira.
