Severe Thunderstorm Warning
for Heavy Rainfall

for parts of Arnhem, Carpentaria, Gregory and Barkly districts.

Issued at 6:28 pm Tuesday, 23 December 2025.

Severe thunderstorms are developing over central and northern areas this evening.

Weather Situation
A trough of low pressure combines with a very humid airmass to produce showers and thunderstorms with heavy rainfall.
HEAVY RAINFALL for the following areas:
Arnhem, Carpentaria, Gregory and Barkly
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Timber Creek, Larrimah and Mataranka.
49 mm was recorded at Yeuralba Ridge in the 30 minutes to 5:57 pm.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* slow down and turn your headlights on
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current

The next warning is due to be issued by 9:30 pm.

Flood Watch For Parts Of The Barkly And Carpentaria Coastal Rivers

FLOODING POSSIBLE IN PARTS OF THE BARKLY AND CARPENTARIA COASTAL RIVERS OVER THE COMING DAYS

Catchments likely to be affected include:
McArthur River
Robinson River
Calvert River
Settlement Creek
Nicholson River
Georgina River and Eyre Creek
Barkly

A Flood Watch is current for parts of North-Western Queensland, adjacent to the Northern Territory Flood Watch area.
