for Heavy, Locally Intense Rainfall And Damaging Winds

for Daly and parts of Arnhem, Carpentaria and Gregory districts.

LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL AND DAMAGING WIND GUSTS CONTINUING OVER THE WESTERN TOP END INTO MONDAY.

Weather Situation
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is currently located northwest of Katherine. The system is expected to remain as a deep tropical low while it continues moving through the Daly district towards the west-southwest into Monday, before crossing the Daly coast later on Monday morning.

Warnings for Sunday 22 March

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas:
Daly, Arnhem, Carpentaria and Gregory
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for the western Top End tonight and during Monday. HEAVY RAINFALL may also develop about the DARWIN area from late tonight into Monday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 80 and 120 mm are likely. 24-hourly rainfall totals between 180 to 230 mm are likely.
Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is also possible for central and western parts of the Daly district, including areas south of DARWIN, tonight and into Monday morning, with six-hourly rainfall totals up to 180 mm. Isolated 24-hourly rainfall totals of 250 to 300 mm are possible.
Localised DAMAGING WIND GUSTS with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are possible in the warning area, more likely to the south of the system, and may develop through the DARWIN area from late tonight into Monday morning.
Further showers and thunderstorms are possible over the remainder of the Top End as the system contracts west.

Locations which may be affected include Darwin, Katherine, Palmerston, Wadeye, Nauiyu, Batchelor, Adelaide River, Pine Creek, Cooinda, Timber Creek, Dundee Beach and Palumpa.
127.5 mm was recorded at Adelaide River East in the 6 hours to 10:15 pm.
115 mm was recorded at Howley Creek in the 6 hours to 10:15 pm.
123 mm was recorded at Adelaide River Town in the 6 hours to 10:05 pm.
121 mm was recorded at Central Arnhem Plateau in the 6 hours to 3:30 pm.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions deteriorate
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit

Major Flood Warning For The Katherine River

MAJOR FLOODING LIKELY AT NITMILUK CENTRE FROM MONDAY MORNING AND AT KATHERINE BRIDGE FROM MONDAY AFTERNOON
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is bringing widespread heavy to locally intense rainfall to the Katherine River catchment. Forecast heavy rainfall from Sunday evening is likely to cause significant and rapid river level rises across the Katherine River catchment.
Minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is likely to develop at Nitmiluk Centre from Monday morning. Major flooding is likely to develop at Katherine Bridge from Monday afternoon.
This situation will be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End including the Katherine River catchment. A Severe Weather Warning is also current for parts of the Northern Territory.

Katherine River Gorge Road:
Minor flooding is occurring and major flooding is likely along the Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is currently at 3.74 m and rising, with minor flooding.
The Katherine River at Nitmiluk Centre is likely to exceed the moderate flood level (5.50 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. The river may exceed the major flood level (6.50 m) Monday morning.

Katherine Town:
Major flooding is likely along the Katherine River at Katherine Town.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is currently at 10.37 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Katherine River at Katherine Bridge is likely to exceed the minor flood level (16.00 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. The river is likely to exceed the moderate (16.5 m) flood level from Monday morning and major (17.5 m) flood level from Monday afternoon.

MAJOR FLOODING POSSIBLE AT ADELAIDE RIVER TOWN DURING MONDAY
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is forecast to bring widespread heavy to locally intense rainfall to parts of the Top End. Forecast rain from Sunday is likely to cause rapid river level rises across the Adelaide River catchment. River levels at Adelaide River Town are expected to exceed the minor flood level overnight Sunday into Monday, with moderate flooding likely to develop Monday morning. Further rises and major flooding is possible during Monday.
The situation will be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End including the Adelaide River catchment. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and Severe Weather Warning are also current for parts of the Northern Territory.

Upper Adelaide River:
Moderate flooding is likely along the Upper Adelaide River.
The Adelaide River at Adelaide River Town is currently at 3.67 m and rising, below the minor flood level.
The Adelaide River at Adelaide River Town is expected to exceed the minor flood level (11.50 m) overnight Sunday into Monday. The river is likely to reach around the moderate flood level (11.90 m) Monday morning. Further rises to the major flood level (12.30 m) are possible with forecast rain during Monday.

Adelaide River and Margaret River:
Flooding is likely along the Margaret River and the Adelaide River below Adelaide River Town.

PROLONGED MAJOR FLOODING CONTINUING AT DALY RIVER POLICE STATION, WITH RENEWED RISES LIKELY
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Narelle is forecast to bring widespread heavy to locally intense rainfall to the parts of the Top End during Sunday into Monday. There is currently major flooding along the Daly River, and forecast rainfall is expected to prolong major flooding and likely cause renewed river level rises.
River levels at Daly River Police Station are expected to remain above major flood level for the remainder of Sunday into next week, with renewed level rises likely. The situation will be closely monitored and this warning will be updated as required.
A Flood Watch is current for parts of the Top End including the Daly River catchment. A Tropical Cyclone Advice and Severe Weather Warning are also current for parts of the Northern Territory.

Flooding likely along the Daly River above Douglas River.
Fergusson River:
Flooding likely along the Fergusson River.
Lower Daly River:
Prolonged major flooding is continuing along the Daly River with renewed rises likely.
The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is currently at 14.27 m and steady, with major flooding.
The Daly River at Daly River Police Station is expected to remain above the major flood level (14.00 m) during Sunday. Further rises are likely with forecast rain.
